This article illuminated that you do not necessary have to fail a test to enter the program and become subject to randoms. The speculation is that Elliot's text messages coupled with the dispensary visit maybe enough to warrant his inclusion, though I disagree.
The NFLPA would fight that hard and the NFL has been in tail-between-the-legs mode since Brady stopped fighting his suspension. It's almost like the NFL said, "Oh crap! We won!!" and then realized, "Oh crap! We won..." and figured they would be villainized in the media so they started softening up some on various punishments. Reducing La'veon Bell's suspension. Clearing the other NFL players from the al-jazeera story within days once they interviewed where it took months to clear Peyton Manning.

I doubt very seriously the NFL is going to suspend one of the most hyped first round draft players before he ever steps on a field in a real NFL game.

I know that outside of fighters, there is no reason to dehydrate yourself to lower your weight, because it doesnt actually do anything other than hurt performance.
It was the offseason. But he showed up for camp 6 pounds over-weight. Athletes are known for trying to to do this to make weight.

No, he texted her using his phone most likely. It was a text conversation and both phones store that.

In that case this took place before camp right? So maybe if we are lucky all will be ok and hes done getting stoned. If not hes a total moron and will cost us eventually.

That doesnt make it better. As soon as he goes theough a couple days of normal fluid intake the weight goes right back to where it was.

You have to have more than text messages that don't indicate he's using pot or a visit to a dispensary where he buys nothing.

I easily spin this as:

1. A girlfriend trying to set up a lawsuit against him (why the heck would you text something like that anyway? That's face-to-face conversation material)

2. I just wanted to see what a legal marijuana dispensary looked like from the inside. Curiosity got the best of me, and I didn't purchase anything.

No smoking gun - pun intended - in either case.

I think most fans vastly underestimate how many NFL players smoke pot. It's not just the young kids either. Heck, Mark Stepnoski was not only an avid pot smoker, he has always been a legalized pot advocate.

Saw this a moment ago:

Thompson texted Elliott: “I know you’re stressed out, if you need me call me. Just do everything you can to pass your drug test tomorrow. You’ll be okay. I’m here for you”

To that, Elliott responded: “I’m gonna pass.”

In a subsequent text, Elliott wrote: “About to live in this sauna the next 24 hours.”

Elliott’s lead legal advisor, Frank C. Salzano, called the text exchange “a non story.”

“We are happy to move on to football and look forward to playing against the Giants,” Salzano said.

This text exchange, coupled with the Seattle visit, may be enough to put Elliott in the league’s substance-abuse program. Players do not necessarily have to fail a drug test to enter Stage 1 (intervention) of the program.

An NFL spokesman said the decision in a case such as Elliott’s is based upon the opinion of jointly appointed independent medical advisers by the NFL and NFLPA.
Sweating out the booze?...businessmen use this tactic regularly, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem getting that out of your system considering he's an athlete, etc. Odd statement.

I have not seen where there is any set rules to influence the committee's decision.

These guys just cannot handle a good thing.

What a bummer.
They should ban alcohol for all players too; sure that would fly with our sponsors and the players. Dumb laws w little sense aren't meant to be followed in such a fundamental fashion; BS. Let them smoke, who cares? Oh yeah, the alcohol sponsors ($). Money has justified a lot of willful ignorance in the past and today is no different.
