FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli called an audible at halftime last Sunday.

The Washington Commanders had just kicked a field goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first half at FedExField and were set to take possession at the start of the third quarter, trailing by three. Marinelli moved his veteran leader on the defensive line, Tyrone Crawford, from tackle outside to end where he began his career but has seldom practiced since 2014.

“I had him make sure he was on top of all that stuff and I felt at halftime, it was something I thought we could do to help us win,” Marinelli said. “And he did a real solid job for us.”

Wish he would mix in some more blitzes from different areas.

I believe that will be the next step, he really wants to get to the qb with just 4 lineman, if rotating all these players don't work I see more blitzing coming. I'm glad he's changing it up. I believe this new starting formation will help our pass rush some, I want Irving rotating more as a 3T

He's struggled to get to the QB for two years and still hasn't blitzed a lot. I don't expect him to change his stripes this year either.

True, last year when he did blitz he actually got results. We can only hope at this point

Well......he isn't content with doing the same thing over and over again.......and expecting diff. results, He is trying to put people in spots that they can contribute........good coaching on the run.

This is odd, usually he does better with less. Now he has some really low talent, and its producing as it should. To be fair, he waits til the team is backed into a corner than does his best work , i wish he would switch that around.

I think this is good in a way, tells fans who some players really are, and expectations should and have dropped . Nothing else we can do until Rod can turn it around because for years this team has screamed "we need defense" and we got the best dang RB to help them out. Kudos to us.

I have no problem mixing and matching, but if you take a step back and look at this, we signed two DL in the offseason, both have lost their starting gigs....factor in that we now have both Crawfords at DE's with an often injured McClain and a rookie Collins who missed alot of the preseason starting inside. this doesn't sound like the right recipe for a DL.

This team has had a defensive philosophy of only having one or two pass rushers and the other DL and defenders were support.

It was that way with Lilly. Randy White, Too Tall Jones, Charles Halley and Ware.

We have just never drafted DL like we just did with our 3 All Pro OLine men.

The Cowboys built teams with defensive coaches like Ernie Stautner and Dave Campo and Zimmer, want stead and Davis.

The Cowboys have lost all our defensive coaches and failed to promote quite a few who left for greener pastures.

Marinnelli has been average in my opinion and his schemes have been around for years and other teams are not scared of what he is doing nor being out coached by Rod.

I think next year we may need to upgrade our DC if this team is really going to succeed.

We have the worst defensive line talent in the league. It's been abysmal since 2013. You could debate that we have, arguably, the worst starting 11 on defense in the league. The fact that this defense even gets a stop is a minor miracle. I can't think of a single front 7 with less 'talent' than ours.

The DC isn't the problem.

As far as the mixing and matching, something something chairs, titanic. you can dress a turd, but in the end it's still gonna smell like Risen.

Blitz for crying out loud

What are you afraid of the secondary is going to get toasted? Well don't look now

The DC is involved in the entire process. He's not some 'poor schlub' who has no say in the players he gets for his defense.

He had plenty of resources invested in his defense last year, and the results were still disappointing. His 'Rushmen' have ranked no higher than 25th in sacks during his entire tenure here. The game passes everyone by at some point.

He was content for two seasons to keep doing the same thing over and over. I think he realizes his back is up against the wall now and he has no choice.

But credit to him for at least trying something now.
