Aikman: "If I were Tony, I'd want to play this week"

Can someone here tel me, besides massaging Romo's ego, the benefit of playing the China doll?

Yes, matey, nothing like a QB controvery leading up to the playoffs.

And, did I mention the possibility of injury to a fragile, rusty QB?

Could be wrong here, but methinks Garrett does not want to go that route in a meaningless game.

So getting Romo, your best backup QB who hasn't seen live-fire in a game that counts in over a year, some playing time leading up to the playoffs creates a QB controversy? Get real.

Are you saying that Dak Prescott and the rest of the team are so fragile that they can't withstand Romo getting a little game action?

Well, there goes your measure of faith for all to see... matey.

If you don't know the answer then there is no help for you. Romo had not played in over a year and there is a possibility we could be relying on him to come in and play in January.

Tony's unsharpened game can be every bit as bad as some of Sanchez's worst games. Tony can turn the ball over just as much as Sanchez when he's not sharp. The last time we saw Tony's unsharpened game was vs Carolina last season when he tossed 3 INT's including 2 pick-sixes and finished the game with a broken collarbone and a passer rating of 27.2. Mark Sanchez has had only two passer rating games lower than that in his entire career. Last week was a perfect opportunity to get Romo on the field for a series or two with a 21 point lead. We had our starters in when all Dak did on the Cowboys final series was hand the ball to McFadden.

They could have had Tony do that just so he could get a feel for being back on the field in a live game situation. If he doesn't get to work with some of the players like Zeke in a game situation to workout some of the kinks, miscommunications could happen and it could lead to disaster in a playoff game if he has to play. Playing it safe trying to protect players from injury and having them sit out can lead to a loss of momentum and a quick exit from the playoffs which is why our starters played last week and will play some on Sunday. We're playing our starters because it's important to keep them sharp.

If Romo can't survive a series or two in a meaningless game then we're wasting our time preparing him as the backup. If he's going to break apart like Humpty Dumpty after a series or two he should be standing on the sidelines in street clothes. He's going to be a turnover waiting to happen in the playoffs if he has to play with that being his first meaningful live snaps since Nov 2015. It's a mistake not giving him some live game work but we're afraid he's going to get hurt and we're going to bank that he won't be needed in the playoffs.
This is a similar type of miscalculation that was made just ONE YEAR AGO, when, KNOWING ROMO's injury history, the team elected to have the likes of Weeden as a backup plan (for the second year)...which turned out to be no real backup plan at all...and then you have Romo trying too return to early to save a trainwreck season.

We are far enough down the road to all accept the fact that Prescott is the man...and so the organization itself should be confident enough to work out a quarterback who hasn't seen playoff game speed in almost two years.

All of this will be fine if Dallas suffers no unforeseen misfortune, but should the football gods decide to throw a wrench into the works, things will certainly become...well..."interesting".

I love Aikman, but I think he's letting his heart get into his mind here. He sees the aging vet all but pushed out of town and it's pulling on his heart strings. However, he's speaking the truth as far as Romo wanting to play. We've known that since that drawn out, heavily dramatized press conference he held many weeks ago...

"It's never bad to get reps in games," Linehan said. "But again, that question is for someone other than me. You could argue both reasons why you would or wouldn't but we've got to go play the game. If you spend a bunch of time concerned about things that could happen negatively you get consumed by that. But I think we do a good job and Coach Garrett does a great job of just focusing on getting ready to play and focusing on the right things and that's what we're doing." Linehan seems to think Romo can benefit from the live game reps...

Alright, and other coaches obviously disagree. Like I said, I understand both sides.

Eatman had the best argument I've heard and was thinking myself. If he can't take a hit it really doesn't matter when that hit occurs and we should find out before we end up with Cole at qb in the Super Bowl.

If Dak goes down in January, do you want Romo's first pass in over a year to be in a playoff game? I can't believe this needs explained to anyone.

Then again, sarcastically calling a guy who has played hard for the Cowboys for over a decade "China doll" - as if you wouldn't curl up in the fetal position if you were thrown out there - doesn't sound like much of a supporter, anyway.

The controversy would come from the Romonians.
You see, they and you are fanatical in their love for an aging, brittle, expensive QB who has brought use 2 freaking 1st round playoff victories in 11 years.
Chew on that at the seniors center.

Yeah, so expose the China Doll to some hard hits in a meaningless game.
Yeah, sounds like gold, old fellow!

For $50 mil I would would take your girlish hits all day long and then go into a fetal position.
But I understand your love for Romo. How many second round playoff games have we gone to in 11 Romonian years? How many Super Bowls have we been to in 11 years under Romo? Go look it up.

All you have is anti-Romo memes. Otherwise, you have nothing.

You're so anti-Romo you'd have me believe that Sanchez is the superior backup based on a playoff record largely amassed with Jets teams that had actual REAL defenses. But having watched your stale act for several years I would expect nothing less from you.

I need look no further than career passing completion percentage stats to see that Romo blows Sanchez out of the water, nevermind TD-to-INT, yards-per-attempt, et cetera. I know a hater when I see one. And you, chum, are a hater. Away with you.

I have no Romonian-style love for Sanchez.
If Weeden were here I'd just as soon let him play against the Egirls.
Despite what your, ahem, cranial shortcomings suggest, you shouldn't expose your key backup to injury in a meaningless game. But Romo needs an ego boost, so let us see.
You can go back to your Dak-less Madden now, old fellow!
But, hang in there and Dak will be a Madden superstar soon, Romonian!

Matey, me faith is in the Cowboys (and Dak), not an aged, brittle, rusty, very expensive cowboy who has brought us nothing but futility for 11 years, gramps.

There must be some doubt as to injury risk, due to his history and age. Otherwise, there would not be an actual doubt for a backup role. I think that a playoff protective thought process, despite a lack of immediate playing time, is the influence that is being seen.

I'm sorry, but even with the backdrop of Tony, one can't totally protect a player from the game. If it is time, he should be given the team role and allow the pieces fall where they are. One can't protect a player, when he's the top paid player on a team. He either has to get onto the carpet, or the team quickly should move on without. Fears or not.

Same as there is a possibility we could be relying on Sanchez to come in and play in January. If Romo and Dak go down.
