Al-Quadin Muhammad: Defensive End, Miami
6-foot-4, 255 pounds
Strengths:
Excellent get off at the snap in rushing situations. You don’t even have to squint to see shadows of Randy Gregory in his long build and athleticism. One critical difference, Muhammad is now 255 pounds, more than 20 pounds heavier than Gregory was carrying at Nebraska. The strength shows in his bull rush and ability to stack tight ends and tackles away from his body creating room to operate.
Muhammad also demonstrated the speed, when free, to get upfield and disrupt the run game or threaten the outside shoulder of the tackle immediately. His speed-to-power transition is very good and one can see him shock offensive players and put them on skates when he sticks a foot in the ground and attacks a shoulder.
Muhammad appears as a sound wrap up tackler, playing through contact without lunging at a ball-carrier’s legs. From a measurable perspective, he is very near the prototype weakside defensive end Dallas has thrown resources at trying to find for several seasons.
Weaknesses:
Like many young players, Muhammad needs to further develop counters if his initial plan is derailed. The lack of developmental time away from football can only have stunted this progression. As a run defender he shows the ability to set the edge of the defense with strength, but does need to work on shedding those blocks to get involve in the tackle rather than just eating them. His biggest flaw however, is of his own creation.
Lack of availability meant not only the detriment of his team, but to his draft process. With limited material to review he offers more impressions than fully completed pictures. Teams will feel compelled to do a great deal of homework on him to feel comfortable that while his flags that we’re aware of may not look like deal breakers, that the pattern isn’t reflective of more under the covers.
