Cowboys losing Ground? For the Record . reinforces how 2016 was a missed opportunity ***MERGED***

Spoken like a true cheerleader. I dont agree with one thing you said other than Romo was gone no matter what. But then again, that has nothing to do with losing him is worse. The team is worse without Romo as a backup.

Cheerleader? lol. ok. This coming from someone who doesn't think Doug Free was a declining player.

Well, I did not expect to let Church, Wilcox, Claiborne and Carr all to walk......So that is a loss right now for sure. They were not stellar but they all are good players.

None of them made a difference here so pretty much good riddance. But up to this point replacing them with scrubs like Heath isnt going to make us better. Church was the only guy I would call solid to good.

Claiborne was playing all pro as far as I was concerned when he was healthy. He is the ONLY guy I would consider resigning at a bargain rate.

i would have liked to keep between Church and Wilcox, but i didnt expct both to walk. Clair can walk. I was totally in faith that Dallas would pass on a DE in the draft and this and the signings gives them justification to ignore whats wrong in Dallas.

Defense is clearly the red headed step child in Dallas. Jones has gone all in on the offense and will make due with a middling defense trying to get lucky. He simply isnt a good enough GM to get both sides of the ball good.

He did get lucky and strike gold with Dak otherwise this franchise would have been in another 10 year tail spin. I still have doubts he can win us a SB with the way he manages the team and continues to employ the likes of Garrett. At least he realizes how madly he needs great coordinators to run the football, side of things.

How much ground did we lose and what do we need to retake that ground?

It is a mixed bag, but the sad thing is we could have improve substantial and we did not.

Without any more FA and not counting draft:
OL got worse
RB less depth
WR the same or better with more experience
QB will have less depth
TE same

DL is going to be better from more experience and possibly return from injury (though always injuries)
LB will be much better if Jaylon is good
CB is worse
S is worse though Jones has more experience

if you were a "rah rah " fan, great year, you got to hi five your friend, talk smack, act like you did something. fine, a great year, if you are a fan of the team, well we got stopped right were we deserved too. For most, they like the mediocrity, just enough to keep them involved, not enough to where they are going to get angry. Keeps them middle of the pack. It just depends on where you put yourself.
You don't need that many commas; I promise.

replace replace replace. It come down to coach. Rod does well with B players, but what can our do DB and LB coach do in a pinch? We still need a qb hunter. and change of philosphy to go after the qb instead of allowing them to carve us up.

he did great with sapp, mcfarland and rice in tampa

Our two biggest needs heading into the offseason was the fact we still needed a better pass rush and that we needed to upgrade the secondary.

Thus far, we've done nothing to upgrade the pass rush. And we've signed one CB who is probably not as good as Carr or Claiborne. And what's left on the market isn't likely to improve our needs. So it's all about the draft.

Some will write this off as a woe is me post but it's a real discussion point. The goal in the offseason is to get better and right now, we have not. We seem to be throwing all our hopes at improving at our draft.

That's a risky proposition IMO.

Yes, there will be no quick fix with this defense. Will probably take 2 to 3 years to get this D to a championship level.

I'm not panicking over the Cowboys tepid Free-agency maneuvers.
But, while other teams were trying to sure up their weak spots and improve their strong spots, we may have weakened our weak spot, Defense, and also weakened our strong spot, Offense.
At best, it seems that we are holding pat and hoping that we can replicate last years success.
The players we signed in FA on defense aren't great improvements over their predecessors, but are just replacements with the hope that they can basically provide the same production.
In addition, there hasn't been anything that has happened to think that the Defense Achilles heal, Pass Rush DE, has been addressed/improved.
On offense, losing Leary and Free is not anything to brush over and could effect the chances of the offense repeating last year's success. Collins is still not proven and Green hasn't shown he can be relied on as a replacement at RT.
Many of he top NFC teams last year, e.g. Packers, Seahawks, Giants, Arizona, had injury issues last year that hindered their chances but if they address them and have some luck on the injury front, they can be in good position to have greater success.
There's no reason to panic at this point but it's obvious that it will be a tough task for this team to replicate last years success. Not impossible, but it will be a tough task.

I have watched NY, Philly and Washington play the big money FA game and what has it accounted for? Nothing Other teams like Jacksonville seem to win the FA battle every year and what do they have to show for it? Nothing Miami went out and paid a ransom for Suh are they any closer to a SB? NO

Personally I like the moves Dallas has made in FA because they are filling gaps but it will fall to the draft to get the difference makers.

I share your sentiments to some degree. I have stated I would rather sign one FA of significance than 4 or 5 middling players.

I do believe the F.O. is now forced to address the areas I wanted addressed.

They will have to draft a CB early. They will have to draft a SS. They will have to draft a DE/Edge type and they will have to play someone at RT other than Free.(whether this is done using current players or through the draft remains to be seen)
These are the areas I wanted to address. Outside of throwing a hail mary with Moore, none of them have been addressed. That means the draft should look something like I wanted it to.

If they do it right then the 4 positions I wanted to see upgraded will be.
I am happy they re-signed Terrance and was pleasantly surprised.
I wanted them to re-sign Claiborne but it looks like that won't happen.
