Brooks and Jeremiah just cited two safeties: Budda Baker and Obi Melifonwu. Said Baker has great range and could be a full time CB. Said Obi is a tackling machine and could also play some CB. In analyzing our roster, and defensive scheme (Rod really wants to run base cover-2), I could see us going S in first round if there is no true "war daddy" DE available. I think S is a more important position in Rod's scheme than CB. Then, DE or CB in round 2.

Melifonwu, yes.

Baker, no way. That little shrimp can't begin to cover the receivers or TEs in the NFC East. We don't need a run around in the box tackler at #28. Melifonwu, on the other hand, very intriguing as he's an ideal back end S when Jones is covering TEs.

In our scheme, S is more important than CB.

Not to mention I think he has enough ability to take over Scandrick's spot as the nickel corner and still have enough skill to play safety as well.

Picking at #28 is far more unpredictable than at #4. It will really depend on how things unfold for the previous 27. At this point there is almost always a player that begins a slide down the draft. What if we get a premium player at a position that is not considered a need?

What if WRs Corey Davis or John Ross slide down to the 28th position, that would be bargain value.

Then again, let's say a QB slides and another team wants to trade up and are willing to make a great deal, the Cowboys don't consider it?

The point is, a pick is only good from the standpoint of the draft if value is achieved. Realistically, we won't know until that player begins performing. The Cowboy management could get high praise for filling needs with players at that position but if those players suck, then it is all meaningless.

There was an abundance of criticism for taking Dak when the Cowboys "could have used a player capable of contributing at a position of need". turns out they did, in a huge way.

The Cowboys take a WR in round 1 and are lampooned. Before the season, they lose a starter, say Terrance Williams. The rookie comes in and becomes Dez's perfect bookend. Meanwhile, a 5th round pick of a DE gets rookie of the year despite the fact that the Cowboys were criticized for not "addressing the need at the DE position" when the 2nd round ends.

It could and does happen as we all know.

I'm not sold on Obi after just looking at some of his highlight reels. Not a very good tackler given his size and his technique will get exposed against bigger backs/receivers. His head is consistently on the wrong side of the target's body.

If we're looking for Cover 2 type safeties, any thoughts on that kid from Colorado: Tedric Thompson?

He's going to start right away and make an impact.

If he's there at our pick, I wouldn't hesitate. Put him at FS and move Jones back to corner. It would be upgrading two spots because Baker is just a natural FS with FS instincts. Under 6 feet or not, the guy can lay a lick too.

Yes, I can see an Earl Thomas comparison, although I think Baker might be more instinctive. Baker is pretty close to Thomas' size when he came out.

Just listen to his college coaches and you can see how much they think of him and his smarts and play style. They loved him. He's been starting at Washington since the day he stepped foot on campus.
