I'm seeing an awful lot of Brown overrating by Cowboys fans. He played well for a rookie 6th round pick but he has some bad habits and he grabs instinctively when he gets in trouble, which in my experience is a hard habit for young DB's to shake. NFL passing offenses are too good to have sub-par DB's out there, and I think the Cowboys, and many fans here, are expecting Brown and Heath to get the job done.

Awuzie, Lewis, and Byron Jones have bright futures IMO, and Scandrick is a solid slot guy, but this secondary needs a lot more talent.

Same like Richard Sherman. He also grabs.

The big difference is that they never flag him.

stop it, he was a rookie who made his mistkes but played really well for a 6th rounder.

Sixteen years of cornerback experience was leaving the locker room, after all, and the Cowboys’ chances of repeating last season’s success hinges on Brown’s ability to step into a bigger role.
I honestly don't believe that. Not with the additions of Charlton, Awuzie, Lewis and Woods in the draft and with Jaylon and Tapper ready to contribute. Lets be honest, Mo and Carr weren't making impact plays week after week last year.

While I try and contain my enthusiasm, I sometimes have visions of the '81 Niners secondary when I see our group of youngans. I'm pretty fired up about their potential as a unit that will have a chance to blossom together.
:hammer:
I've been thinking the EXACT thing since we've drafted these secondary players! I can only wish that our secondary coaches can match the secondary coaching of that '81 Niners team!

I do worry that Brown could become Mario Edwards part deux.

For this fan, a view of Byron Jones, Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzi, Jourdan Lewis, and Xavier Woods does project a shadow into the future for the Cowboys.

I love how people say they're smart. Anthony called the rookies smart in this article. I think that will be the biggest factor for their dominance in the future.

Young guys with athleticism, intellect, and edginess. :flagwave:

Sadly his actual score was a 4.
Why is that sad? It's been clearly documented all he did was show up, write his name and leave. That was his choice and all the more he wanted involved. Being considered the best defensive pick going into that draft it's not like he was going to improve his draft status.

That was "his" story.

Did you expect him to say that he was just too stupid to answer the test questions?

They can't force you to take the test.

Going in to take the test and intentionally not taking it would be dumber than trying and scoring a 4. Either way it's sad.

Intelligence is a huge factor.

Claiborne definitely has the athletic ability to be really good but always struggled with the mental side of the game.

Wilcox has really good size/athletic ability combo for Safety, but could never quite put it all together (Wonderlic 15).

Church carved out a decent NFL career because his intelligence allowed him to somewhat overcome a significant lack to speed.

Bruce Carter never lived up to his athletic ability. He was the perfect specimen for a 4-3 LB and one of the all time great pure athletes in the NFL, but mentally he was just not quite smart enough.

However, it's not always "book smarts". I've heard Tyrann Mathieu wouldn't take the Wonderlic, but he is obviously intelligent on the field.

Some of my favorite players like Irvin, Erik Williams, Emmitt, probably would not be considered "book smart", but they had great on-field intelligence.

Brown did play pretty good last season. So did Mo, before he got hurt. In fact all the DBs looked better.

I think Matt, Joe & Greg did a really good job. The coaching reshuffle made a heck of a difference. I can't wait to see what they can do with the new guys.

That was all Claiborne could do. He was worthless otherwise, game day. Carr....great man. Lousy CB.

Love the youth movement at these positions. Bout damn time. Sick of watching veteran QB's shred this secondary. Looked like keystone cops.

I agree. However, I will add that sometimes you can teach people what not to do by your poor actions. I think Brown may be very smart and can learn to do the opposite of what they others were doing. Not sure, but so glad he doesn't appear to be like the others.

Awesome post in my opinion. If you aren't going to be book smart, please by all means be football smart and stay smart off the field. As I believe Parcells said..."the number one ability is availability."

Brown went to Purdue. Their worst student would be the Valedictorian at LSU...

You bring up a very good point. Have we started drafting smarter players? Do we have a higher benchmark? I do know we seem to draft team captains and such. Just seems the football IQs are higher but I would love to see us draft players that don't do silly things off the field (wishful thinking I guess at times) We can't draft 100% altar boys, but we need players that are just plain smart.

I was thinking about that Captains thing during the draft. Don't remember it ever coming up this year. Were any of our picks team captains?
