With Help From Veteran CBs, Brown Went From Rookie To Vet “Overnight”

FRISCO, Texas – Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr invested something in Anthony Brown.

The free agency departures of the Cowboys’ 2016 starting cornerbacks could have been a bit of a shock for Brown. Sixteen years of cornerback experience was leaving the locker room, after all, and the Cowboys’ chances of repeating last season’s success hinges on Brown’s ability to step into a bigger role. No one could blame him if the pressure had caught him off guard.

While still Cowboys, Claiborne and Carr invested mentorship into the rapid development of their rookie teammate. Both veterans had been around the league long enough to know that Brown’s successful stints stepping in for injured players only increased the chances Claiborne and Carr might be wearing another jersey soon. “We talked about it even before the season ended last year,” Brown said. “They let me know just to be on alert of what could go down, what’s possible. So I was already expecting something to happen.”...

Nothing against Claiborne, but the image of him mentoring young cb just sounds weird in my mind.
That was all Claiborne could do. He was worthless otherwise, game day. Carr....great man. Lousy CB.

Love the youth movement at these positions. Bout damn time. Sick of watching veteran QB's shred this secondary. Looked like keystone cops.

There'll be some healthy competition in OTAs and TC this year in the secondary. Having some steadily improving vets and very promising rookies competing against one another is a sure-fire motivator and a healthy situation that should benefit all concerned. This defense is destined to be one that's on the rise. I'm really encouraged by our prospects to improve greatly with all of the added talent. ;)

Yep. Thats about it. To me, the defence improved when the FO decided to let the old guard walk. It could be a slow start to the season but a strong finish. This is a season to look forward too!

He was playing lights out last season before the injury...again.

Agreed...but never rose to the level of value, all considered, to merit the free agency contract that he signed this off season. I wanted him to be there, too...

True -- at least we didn't take the bait and try to better a contract that would have possibly proven a big mistake. The acquisitions that we made in the draft should more than make up for the loss of some of our defensive vets this year. I think we'll be rocking along just fine well before midseason comes along. The moves we made in the draft were some that were imperative for the defense to prosper. It's all good.

A lot of the best coaches are players that were really afterthoughts.

Mo's main problem was always health. If he stayed healthy which would have increased his confidence, he wouldn't have been a bust.

Just my opinion---seems like every time Mo started to show something, he got banged up. At times when he played, he wasn't one hundred percent so that hurt his confidence.

For this fan, a view of Byron Jones, Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzi, Jourdan Lewis, and Xavier Woods does project a shadow into the future for the Cowboys.
While I try and contain my enthusiasm, I sometimes have visions of the '81 Niners secondary when I see our group of youngans. I'm pretty fired up about their potential as a unit that will have a chance to blossom together.
