Bob Stoops to retire as Oklahoma coach after 18 seasons

Bob Stoops, the longest-tenured coach in college football, will tell the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday that he is retiring after 18 seasons, a source confirmed to ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley will succeed Stoops, who will remain with OU in some capacity, according to The Oklahoman, who first reported Stoops was retiring as head coach.

WWLS Radio reported that Stoops said he is not retiring because of his health and will meet with the team at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Heard about this on the radio. Really surprised.

I wonder if it had anything to do with joe mixon.

Stoops had been getting roasted locally about it. Not just in Texas but Oklahoma too.

I've heard if Garrett crumbles this year maybe Stoops was going to be the successor...Makes you wonder if Stoops is taking a breather before taking on this job. Makes sense to start evaluating from afar...keep tabs.

I really think Garrett is under the gun this year...and nobody is talking about it. After a 13-3 flame out in the first round...if he doesn't @ least get back to the playoffs and win a couple games...I think he's history.

And just like I thought...Stoops is looking @ a shot @ the NFL...

You would seriously want to sit though another year of Garrett if he flamed out this year? I'll checked back w/ ya if that happens...because I just can't see Jerry/Stephen not doing anything if this went down hill. Too much pressure to make a change.

The fact we were even 13-3 with a rookie 4th round pick QB gives Garrett job security. I'm not saying he is safe if he misses the playoffs or has another 4-12 season but...he's not Super Bowl or bust.

The Jones's are very comfortable with Garrett. For the first time since Jones has owned the team, he is placing an emphasis on continuity at the head coach position. Love or hate Garrett, might as well get used to him...if he can survive a 4-12 season and 3 straight 8-8 seasons, someone with power believes in him.

That interview said Stoops is done with coaching and won't be back to coaching in a year or 2 in college or the NFL. You must have misheard what they were saying.

It seems like some people in here never say anything positive about the Boys. I just don't get it.
