Troy Aikman: Age isn't an excuse for Ezekiel Elliott actions

If anyone has seen the dark side of NFL fame, it's Troy Aikman.

The Hall of Fame quarterback led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles in the dynasty years of the 1990s, but it wasn't always pretty for his version of America's Team. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion some negative press would find its way to the Cowboys' locker room, as it routinely did via legends like Michael Irvin, Charles Haley and a list of others.

With Ezekiel Elliott now operating under a light even brighter than the one that beamed onto Aikman and Co., the former QB isn't willing to use age as a means of excusing the transgressions -- whether perceived or real -- of the NFL's leading rusher.

“I think the guy, what little dealings I’ve had with him,” said Aikman, via Mark Lane of All22.com. “I don’t think he’s — I’m careful in how I say this. I don’t think he’s necessarily a bad guy. But I also don’t buy into, ‘Well, he’s 21 years old,’ or, ‘he’s 22 years old,’ or however old he is or any other player in the NFL.

"That’s old enough to know right from wrong and how to act.”

I don't think people are excusing his behavior because of his age. I think people are saying the UNDERSTAND his behavior because of his age. The things he is getting "in trouble" for are pretty tame for the average 21-22 year old. He should be more aware because he is a public figure.

okay thanks Troy

What because Troy does not act like a homer he is anti Cowboy? He knows he dealt with this and has seen it up close. Troy was the perfectionist he was always serious about the game and the team. However Troy always looked after his guys, when others were ducking for cover during Irvin's trial Troy was there in the court room supporting Irvin. What Troy is saying is the truth yet so many here do not want to deal with the truth. This is a big stage Zeke is on matter of fact in sport the Dallas Cowboys is the top stage and his action of what he does on and off the field matter. He is blowing any benefit of the doubt even with some of these small incidents and it can cost him. These people are not saying this to rake Zeke over the coals they say this because they do not want to see him blow this once in a life time chance. That is why Garrett went to Zeke and asked him what do you want out of this career?

Zeke is definitely a knucklehead but a lot of it is brought to light because of social media.

I'm sure Zeke will eventually get himself suspended but right now he is guilty of his name appearing in the news for silly things or things the justice system said he didn't do.

He needs to get it together for sure though.

Troy is 100% right about age not being an excuse for Zeke. I have no idea the context of the quote though so there could have been much more to the conversation.

FWIW I have always thought Troy called a great game and never felt he unfairly ripped the team.

Oh cool, another person talking hot air about Zeke. Yawn.

Camp has now started and still the tired old narratives are being rehashed.

But it's 247 sports so not surprised. They fish for stories every single day.

Might be me but Aikman's responses to situations like Zeke's always come when thing are a bit more quiet.

The fact that even Zeke's parents are concerned about his behavior possibly being a problem speaks volumes.

Granted, most of what he does may not be things that constitute a threat to society -- they're just not advisable.
