Gamble on Jaylon Smith will pay dividends

The gamble the Cowboys made on Jaylon Smith will more than provide a potential pro-bowl/all pro player.

Combined with their investments in the secondary and steadfast offense, it should allow them to focus writ large on the defensive line in the draft in free agency.

The only thing I'm concerned about is Taco Charlton, but I've never been enamored with that pick, so perhaps I'm biased.

I think with the building blocks of Collins and potentially Irving, and great depth options across the board, it may not be as far behind as I feared. If we can get Lawrence long term for a reasonable price, I would be all up for trading for a dynamic player at defensive end to play opposite him.

Curious, is this a contract year for Irving and Lawrence?

We already have Crawford eating into the our cap kitty. I don't see us having 3 high priced D-linemen. Add that to the cost of our O-linemen (Martin pending) and that's a lot of our resources tied up in our lines.

I firmly believe in building a team from the inside out, build the trenches. There just has to be limits.

I vividly remember the poll during the off season asking how high his ceiling was.

There is no question the same poll today would bring much different results.

The Cowboys it seems were right all along.

Jaylon made a big forced fumble that was recovered by the refs. I'm ready for a big game changer from him. He's special.

Just as some of us treat 1 and 2 year players we will wait and see. But in most of these young guys they are off to a promising start

I think after this season, we can move on from Crawford without much cap ramifications.

Right now our kicker and punter are making more than any player on our defense outside of about two players. Our cap outlook is about to look bright for a couple years...we can afford to retain our own young defensive players if they prove worthy.

If he continues to heal and make progress...I think you are spot on with J. Smith.

If I'm not mistaking, Dak is on year 2. Next year is 3rd year followed by restricted the year after. We would want to extend in that 3rd year to prevent future problems... Kirk Cousins
So we have:
Crawfords hit 2018 - 6 million base (Potential Out: 2019, 4 yr, $30,685,000; $4,200,000 dead cap - Spotrac)
Martins new contract
Irvin and Lawrence needing addressed

Man, success does have its cost.

We are in great shape. Let's give this season a chance to play out before jumping to judgments about what our needs may be next season. Our Dline may be better than expected. We have a lot of youth there still. Guys do get better sometimes.

We may look at things after this season and feel like LT is our biggest need. I'm more worried about Tyron's back long term than any potential issues with our defense. We'll probably need RB depth and maybe a new, pass catching TE.

But yes, Jaylon has the goods. Hope he stays healthy.

As of today, neither Lawrence nor Irving deserve anything..can that change? Absolutely..but not as of now..

We also have the franchise tag..before I give tank a big contract, I would slap the tag on him

Not quite ready to anoint DLaw, but if he can put together an 8-10 sack season, we can't just let him walk

I let him walk unless he goes off for like 12-14 sacks. Then I try to do a playing time incentive-laden deal.

My biggest issue is similar to my worries about Tyron. Back issues for big folks tend to recur and linger for their entire career.

If Smith continues to get better and the addition of Moore and Irving back from suspension provide more pass rush help, this defense might be able to break out of the below average to average rut they have been in the last few years.

I would love to have it play out like this but in reality if he goes off for 12-14 sacks, in a league desperate for good edge players, some team is going to give him a real contract and not some incentive laden deal.

I actually expect Lawrence to be gone after this season. I suspect he'll be too pricey for their liking and they'll hope Charlton (and maybe Tapper) fills his hole and they might go DE again in the draft. With his injury and failed test history, Lawrence is a real big risk to throw a lot of money at IMO.

Sure when he breaks down and actually doesn't play like a pro bowler anymore.

And who will be there on the trade block (or free agency)? Elite pass rushers aren't usually available. Vernon was a one off I believe, but it seems there is no way will Stephen pay that kind of money for anyone at this point.

I still have my foot on both the brake and gas with Jaylon. One game is not enough to reduce the pressure significantly on the brake IMO. Collins is going to eat some money when his time comes up we are talking a war daddy contract and well deserved if he continues dominating on the Dline. D Lawrence has to be tempered with his back issues he will continue to have issues unless some new procedure happens to cure his back. We cannot depend on a often injured player like Green, and Lawrence especially with a crippling contract(Sean Lee is an outlier).

Tyron Smith and his back will continue to be the elephant in the room, we know that injury is going to linger throughout his career.

It's good to not be worrying about Randy Gregory's return, the talent level of Mark Sanchez as a backup, who is better Dak or Wentz after week one.
