In today's news, a smart man says a smart thing. More at 11.

His logic is bad. The criticism is that he'll only give max effort when his payday is at stake. Wanting to be in Dallas forever isn't necessarily equivalent to being prepared to continue going all out once you've been paid.

Saying that, I think the criticism is misplaced. I've seen nothing in D-Law to suggest he loafs in non-contract years. His issue has been injuries.

His future depends upon his performance only -- whether it comes during his contract year or not. I like that he's being careful to stress that point and that he's aware he'll need to keep it up to stay with the Cowboys. Nevertheless, his performance will speak for itself each year he plays. Hopefully, he means what he says. If not, his career won't last nearly as long as he says he'd like it to. It's always nice to hear that kind of talk, although it's even better if and when he shows he's means it. To be sure, it's a long-term test.

anybody ever find it crazy how people always perform really well in contract years? happens year after year with plenty of players. its like, were you phoning it in for 3 straight years and just finally put in effort? wouldn't it be better to always put in that effort...would lead to more money, right?

Hope he has a great year. Also hope he's NOT rewarded with a big contract. Tag him, prove it again and then we can talk. Unless of course he is willing to take a team friendly deal which hardly merits much discussion since it almost never happens in pro sports.

It would lead to more money but lets make an example:

1. you get 80% money from 20% effort
2. you get 100% money from 100% effort.

What would be your choice ?

Really. I wouldnt even tag him. Too high of a risk.

Cut his arse lose after this year. Wasnt worth the 2 picks we spent on him. He already cost us way enough.

good example. i personally would go with option 2 but clearly most choose to do option 1. I always look at it as you do 20% effort, you take a chance to get hurt in your contract year, losing your chance at your payday....wouldn't have to worry about that if you always gave 100%....

Well, I do like the fact that he's only 25 and headed for that 2nd contract.

Agree but

Knowing the Joneses, he'll get a big contract by the end of the year and get 'hurt' in the off season
