But frankly they didn't need Jones anyway, so it's not like the Pats lost the trade.

NFL are hard to judge really. Especially when big name players get traded. Rookie contracts are extremely valuable in the NFL and the crux of trading for stars like Jones and Collins is that you are basically paying for the right to negotiate early or franchise tag them. Same here with Butler
