That is the only semi rational thing I can come up with that sort of makes any kind of sense.
Jerry is done and he knows it. This final run with Garrett will be his last. He doest want to start over. He is hanging onto that last hope that HIS way with Garrett will bear fruit and he can fade off into the background and let his kids take the mantle. And by keeping Garrett around he keeps that hope alive. Maybe its a promise to his kids, maybe he is just getting old and tired. Or maybe I am dead wrong.
