I love Earl Thomas and wouldn't be against him coming here, but we would still be relying on Frazier to step it up. Thomas erases a lot, but at this point Frazier is not the impact type of player at SS that Kam Chancellor was. That's what we need as much as anything...a legit SS that can not only tackle but make plays in the passing game. Frazier is not a playmaker in the passing game at this point. And if he gets injured...we're stuck with Heath at SS and he's not a SS.
On the flip side, if we got a really good SS, we would have Frazier as a backup and then we have Byron at FS and Heath and Woods as quality backups. Again, not against Earl Thomas coming here, but there's a lot of factors that have to come into play. Oh, and we would need a coach that would know how to use Earl Thomas.
We need deep speed at WR. Something that D-Coordinators are scared of and they have to account for as they can't allow him to not be doubled. This would mean less doubles for Dez and Beasley because you can only double so many receivers. I really wouldn't have any issue moving Dez to more snaps as the Z-Receiver. Anything to get T-Will out of there.
I'm always leery of smaller, speedy linebackers that are stars in college that are not edge rushers. Guys like AJ Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, Myles Jack, Aaron Curry, etc. Jack isn't living up to expectations. Usually those are the players that are the highest risk of being a bust. I think Sean Lee still has plenty of tread on the tire and Jaylon started to look really good in coverage and got better and better against the run in the last two months. Smith would have to be a WILL in our scheme because the MIKE in this scheme requires too much of taking on blockers.
What we need to do is re-sign Hitchens, Lawrence, Martin to long term deals. We need to get Irving on a short term deal. We need to find a quality veteran DT and some help at RDE. If Taco comes along nicely, they'll need backups just to give him a breather.
I really wouldn't have a problem signing or not signing Thomas. If Anthony Brown plays the slot like he did in Scandrick's absence, then that's quite an upgrade.
But all of this is for not with this coaching staff. Even if they change some things and have a great 2018...they'll fall apart in the playoffs because they are not good enough of a coaching staff to be the upper tier coaching staffs in the league. And then come 2019 they'll get exposed again.
