Is Marinelli thinking of retiring?

There is no way they let him wait until after the draft to decide.

Gotta say, I'm desperately hoping you're 100% correct on that score.

Waiting that long would totally destroy our chances to acquire a decent replacement.

It'd be suicidal. Telling him to "take all the time he needs" would easily backfire if it were to go too far.

I took it to mean all the time you need within reason. No team would wait until after the draft to fill a coordinator spot. No way in hell.

When I read that the FO had told him to do that, It set off alarms that wouldn't quit . . . I can't imagine any FO with a lick of sense would even dare make that statement. My first thought was that if they were going to suggest allowing him sufficient time, they should have made it clear it should be "within reason" as you suggested. Maybe they did and the reporter that quoted them didn't do so as effectively as he should have. In any case, I couldn't agree with you more. A "reasonable amount of time" should have been made understood, imho. It makes much more sense.

Just 2 weeks ago the word reportedly was Marinelli wanted to coach 5+ more years. To me, this sounds like the team is trying to amicably move on from Marinelli so they can retain Eberflus as DC.

Kind of like when Kiffin ‘retired’ and was never heard from again

That's possible, although Garrett would be put to serious disadvantage if a new DC were to be hired at a time when JG is so vulnerable to being put in question. I'm inclined to picture him imploring Marinelli to stick around at least another year to allow things to settle down. No doubt, we'll see how this thing develops as time passes.

Not true. They let him finish out his contract coaching from the attic window of the ranch with an electronic football game down on the sidewalk.

Nobody can ever say we're not classy.

True...but I do believe unlike Kiffin, Marinelli would have a few offers as a DL coach or defensive assistant around the league.

anyone seen anything on this?
I think it was from a paper that we can’t link to.

Maybe there are some tweets out there.

Eberflus to replace him?

Not sure I
If I like that either as we need a scheme to fit the players, not trying to fit players to a scheme which they do not match as well.

I am not sold on Eberflus, IF this happens. But any change would be a welcome right now. But I need to be convinced with facts why Eberflus is the guy. Not gut feelings. LOL.
He hasn't said anything to me about it

I agree with much of this. However, we have invested so much in our offense. Look at the number of first round draft picks, big contracts ect we have playing offense. We have more talent on offense and more invested into the offense than maybe any team in the league. It’s disturbing to see teams know our plays and feel so comfortable playing defense against us.
When evaluating offense vs defense you can’t just use stats and ignore the huge talent gap that has existed for many years between offense and defense.

This was the first down year we’ve had on offense in a long time and despite the loss of the Zeke for six games and all the problems we had on the left side of our OL due to Tyron’s injury we still scored over 30 points in five games and 40 in another. We lost two games where we scored over 30 so some of that has to go on the defense. Wouldn’t really make a lot of sense to fire your OC after one down year primarily due to the loss of your best player for almost half the season and OL issues due to Tyron missing games and not having solid depth.

This certainly doesn’t excuse some of the bad playcalling we saw and the lack of adjustments. The offense can get back on track real quick if we could add a polished speed WR and add a solid backup LT. The OL needs some patch work and we need to improve our receiving corp. We have to make some adjustments to the scheme offensively. We don’t need a major overhaul on offense just some adjustments and a couple of solid player acquisitions.

Marinelli did wonders with this defense. But I’d rather someone else b d coordinator still.

Is Marinelli thinking of retiring?

Does it really matter?
