Makes sense. Coaching is an "up or out" business, and there was no room for Eberflus to move up as long as Marinelli's here.

Whoo! There are some gray hairs growing on some heads already!
You know... the heads that aren't losing hair too fast to gray.

Some of y'all need to just come on over to El Paso and let me offer some good ol' relaxation amongst friends.
Savvy?

Well, if he didn't have the balls to step up when offered then let him go. Seriously, I want a guy who would eat his children to coach this defense.

I think this is the Cowboys not wanting to make a change, but also wanting to keep Eberflus. So, they decided to see if they could move some titles around and make him stay, even though things would essentially still be the same. Matt was like, nah, I'll take the real promotion, thanks.

He had a chance for the same job elsewhere without the dysfunction of what he would have had here.

He made the right choice.

Is this team a a professional sports franchise...

Here’s a thought...

During the interview process weed out family and friends of current coaches.

And then ask “if you would decline a promotion if someone is fired”...

Saying that, good, glad he’s gone...I want all these coaches gone.

After watching some great football this weekend, we are not in the same conversation of those playoff teams.

Reading this does not surprise me.

Again it starts with the Jerry.

Another wasted season approaches us in 2018.

There is a reason why this team has not won a Super Bowl since the 90s.

Idk I guess understand that they wanted to maybe keep rod on as a consultant to eberflus since I can’t think off the top of my head that he’s actually been a sole DC at any level(I could be wrong sorry) and rather not go into the season with a super green DC when the jones are trying to save their adopted red headed son from getting the axe

so they offered Marinelli's job to someone else but we're going to keep him anyway, that's not awkward at all.

Boy, did Jerry and Co ruin that...but typical...they run the Cowboys on a buddy system...dont want to fire anyone because they might hurt their feelings...they blew this.

but Eberflus declined because he respects Marinelli and didn't want to step on his toes.

Sounds like BS. Supposedly Marinelli only plans another year anyway. If Eberflus had wanted the DC position in Dallas, he and Marinelli could have come to whatever working relationship they wanted for the year if it was about respect.

It was about preferring to be with McDaniels in Indy than Garrett and Jerry in Dallas. Which is a pretty big statement on Garret and Jerry.

The guy has lived in Dallas a while now. Dallas is the big stage. The defense actually has a lot of young and improving players.

Saying it was about Marinelli's toes is a transparent face saving out for wanting to get out from Garrett and Jones.

Good news that our management wanted to do the sensible thing.
Bad news that a respected coach who knows the org didn't want to remain with it.

Of course, it's a negative on the Cowboys if they offer him the job and a negative if they don't. Some posters are here to create a complaint no matter what the Cowboys do.

It's like with O-Line coach ... fans trashed the Cowboys for going with an inexperienced Marc Colombo as O-Line coach (even though they actually didn't - they just decided to get a head start on the complaining), and then when they actually hired a very experienced head coach the fans trash the Cowboys for that.

While I agree with your point on the negativity, the reality is that if the Cowboys wanted Eberflus to be the DC and not Marinelli, they should've simply fired Rod and hired Eberflus. In all likelihood, they didn't want to change, they did it to try to retain Eberflus, but that's a jacked way to run a railroad.
