If a player is suspended, they forfeit all guaranteed money in their contract...I believe.

That factor alone make me feel OK paying him in that range.

Tag will be more money. Might has well wrap him up. Dumb of us to let the first productive DE since Ware walk out the door. We need to add talent at defense, not lose it.

IMO , you can't give that type of money to a non QB..

All it takes is one injury and we're screwed..

I would rather have a line of good/avobe average rotational players..

Besides, Lawrence isn't some type of a generational talent like Ware..

IMO Lawrence is your typical "play to get paid" type of player..

I would rather sign 2 or three good/average DL with that money.

That's for rookies. Not sure about second level contracts.

If he wants 17mil let him play on the tag this year

I disagree that he is a play for pay guy. He was showing signs of this sort of potential before he got hurt. He's a special player. Not many can be D Ware. Two different play styles, really, so no comparison. If he were just about the pay day, he'd have chosen a better school. He likes football.

Tag him and force him to prove 2017 wasn’t a fluke... and that he can stay healthy/productive 2yrs in a row.

After that, if all goes well, you work out a long-term.

It's really about the guaranteed money and how the payout is structured. If the Cowboys can get out the deal after year 2 with < $40M sunk in guarantees, I think it's a good deal for the Cowboys. The risk/reward consideration bodes well for the Cowboys with a young, ascending player in a highly coveted position. To captivate DLaw and his agent the Cowboys can throw in another substantial roster bonus that kicks in during March after year 2.

Someone is going to pay this guy. Why allow him to be a force on another team?

He wants $17, the tag is $17.5. I say let him play on the tag for a season. If he plays as good/better than this past season, then you throw money at him. If he doesn't.....the price comes down.

Exactly. Get realistic with contract or play under the tag while we draft players to make you expendable next year. Heck, I don't even want to give generational talent that kind of commitment (but each situation is different).

Probably what his agent is asking for to start which is what Vernon got in New York. Different circumstances with a guy who has had back problems, should expect the contract to be between what Campbell got at Jacksonville last year and Vernon. So somewhere between $60 million and $85 million on a 5 year deal. Suspect it will be around $70 million with $35 million guaranteed with a cap hit of around $9 million in year one and $10 million in year two. Probably a contract like so:
$25 million bonus
year 1 salary $2 million, $5 million prorated bonus, $2 million roster bonus
year 2 salary $3 million, $5 million prorated bonus, $2 million roster bonus
year 3 salary $8 million, $5 million prorated bonus, $2 million roster bonus
year 4 salary $12 million, $5 million prorated bonus
year 5 salary $14 million, $5 million prorated bonus

Give him 8 million guaranteed and the 500k/sack after that.

He won’t be on another team. They will just tag him.

If he wants 17 mill then you have to franchise tag and make him prove it again.

If Dez Bryant can takes 3 steps back like he did when he got his money, along with several other Cowboys, then Demarcus Lawrence is no safe bet either.

Tag him and make him do it again.
Or if we can give Crawford a contract he DID NOTHING TO JUSTIFY, then we might as well pay Lawrence for his ONE good year. We love handing out stupid contracts.

I can definitely see the tag coming, but if they can't get a deal done and he has another productive year, that $17.5M he was just paid doesn't count for anything.

Dumber still to pay an oft injured guy who produced for 1 year during his contract year

The ONLY option is the franchise tag
I would not even discuss a long term deal unless he remains healthy and produces again this year
