Scandrick wasn't going for that though lol. He's too stubborn. We also couldn't really afford to pay him to just play a reserve role.

I actually like Scandrick and his game. But I think what I really liked was the 3 years ago Scandrick. I'm not sure if he's that guy anymore. With Byron going back to corner........I think Lewis or Jones are better suited for the nickel. But the depth would've been nice if one was to go down.
 
Here's how it works.

The Cowboys save $1.4M in cap room (slightly less when you factor the top 51 rule, the Cowboys player with the 52nd highest salary now counts against the cap) on this year's cap.

Here's the math:
Scandrick had a 2018 salary cap hit of $5,281,021. His $3M base falls off. It was not guaranteed. The remainder of Scandrick's prorated bonus of $3,881,021, immediately accelerates and hits the cap. The $5,281,021 (previous cap hit)- $3,881,021 (accelerated new cap hit) = $1,400,000 in cap room gained.

The Cowboys add to $3,881,021 in dead money to the cap but since that is less than his original 2018 cap number, they net cap room.

The Cowboys now no longer have to write a check for $3,000,000 (divided over 17 weeks) to Scandrick for this year so they physically save that money (Which might impact their already low cash-spending #).

Scandrick is now also completely off the books for the 2019 season, which saves them $5.6M in cap room and $4M in actual cash paid out.

Exactly, but in that scenario we are assuming our front office is able to get creative. Poor Will McClay's hands are tied when it comes to free agency due to our free agency budget. He is forced to do everything via the draft. That being said, Seattle needs to get more realistic about trade requests for ET. There is no way Dallas should give up a 1st or a 2nd. I would probably consider giving them a 3rd. If that would not do it then I would pick up the phone and call Tre Boston's agent.

He "goes" for whatever he's told. Just like every player under contract in the NFL does. But only in Dysfunction Junction do the players get to make those decisions.

They saved a mere $1.4 million this year by cutting him. Peanuts for cornerback depth.

I don't think so. He pulled that crap last year and was disgruntled and he gave us NOTHING last year. It was time to move on. This is actually a solid move by them. Cowboys won't miss him. I'm not saying corner is going to be a strength because all of our guys could take a step back. But I'm fine with Byron, Chido, Lewis and Brown at corner. Not sure what they plan on doing with the corner they got from the Panthers or Marquez White but people seem to like him.

Great explanation. So, we get roughly $6.2 million of cap space over the next 2 years when you factor in the rule of 51. I will take that and happily move on from a player that has basically been passed up by Jourdon Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie. Give me Lewis, Awuzie, Jones, and Brown. Pick another CB up in the draft. Duke Thomas will be back and healthy. Time to move on from Scandrick. Scandrick does not want to be in Dallas any way.

Given his salary is not guaranteed next year you see why this is a stupid thing to assume right?

No. The 5.6MM in cap you're crediting to next year takes into account his base salary of 4MM.

That money is not owed unless we decided to keep him next year.

All we are saving against the cap is 3MM of his base salary that we don't pay this year. Everything else is just accounting for already owed hits against the cap... Prorated bonuses and restructured add-ons.

You are correct. We could have kept him one more year and cut him next year when the cap hit would have been minimal. We really only reduce the cap by 1.4 - his replacement this year and 1.6 minus his replacement next year. It was a terrible contract and he really hasn't been a factor for a long time. I am hesitant to ever refer to this type of move as "savings". When you get squat in return you aren't saving anything.

When you factor in what we supposedly save, we actually lose.

What would be worth more? Scandrick on the roster one more year providing experienced back up services or the less than 1 mil we gain on the cap this year?

We aren't saving anything.
