Sean Lee was drafted in the 2nd round in 2010, and has been in the NFL for 8 seasons. In that time, he's started only 72 (4-1/2 years) of a possible 128 games.

Compare to Travis Frederick, who entered the league in 2013 - three years after Lee, and has started 80 games. Accordiing to Pro-Football-Reference, Frederick has a career AV of 51, which Lee has a career AV of 50.

Zack Martin has been in the league 4 years less than Lee, and has started 64 games, with a career AV of 48.

Lee is awesome when he's on the field. But he compares to a top level 4-5 year starter, not a guy who's been in the league for 8 seasons. This gets back to Availability being a key part of Ability. Ability on the bench, or in the trainer's room doesn't help the team. The Cowboys need more reliability at the linebacker position.

Put in another perspective, 4th round journeyman LB Anthony Hitchens has a career AV of 24 that is almost exactly 1/2 of Lee's career AV of 50. And he's been in the league 1/2 the time that Lee has been in the league. Hitchens, who no one would suggest is equal to Lee in talent, has approximately equaled Lee's career AV over the same 4 year time span - simply by remaining healthy for the majority of the time.

Rolando Blackmon at the MIKE?
He was too skinny to play Mike, but he was a solid jump shooter.

What exactly is AV? My apologies if im just slow

When he's on the field he's the best lb in the league.

Can you imagine that 2014 team with a healthy Sean Lee playing WILL linebacker next to rejuvenated Rolando Blackmon at the MIKE? They would have been Super Bowl favorites.

Could you imagine if Garret was hired as HC and Phillips as dc? I liked our team in 07. We tore down a good 3-4 team and installed a terrible 4-3.

He’s a bonus player. So is Jaylon.

If I’m the Cowboys im drafting like neither guy is on the roster.
agreed.
Im also drafting like f/a didnt happen.
Fleming was an excellent signing...but its only a 1yr deal.
Martin might be a find...1yr deal.
Thompson might be the speed WR we need...1yr deal.
Im drafting like it didnt happen.

If a player with Lee's injury history is not one of the best in the league at his position, you let them go. Because Lee is one of the best position, you play him when he's healthy and try to plug the spot when he's not.

Dallas' problem has been less about Lee's health and more about poor planning for when he's not able to play IMO. Better depth would have kept the drop-off from being as dramatic as it has been. Unfortunately, if we don't invest in the position this year, we'll have to same problem.

I don't blame Lee for having injury issues. He gives it his all when he's able to be out there and plays through injury when he can. Dallas has relied on him to be healthy, though, which puts the blame on the front office. Joe Thomas as the only FA addition at the position this year makes it look like that mistake will be made again. Adding a veteran middle linebacker (who like Lee might miss some time because of the wear and tear of the game) would put us in position where if we draft a linebacker early, we create some depth that might allow us to have three quality linebackers on the field unless there are multiple injuries.

Who cares?

Pick on a non ProBowler ......not SLee

Our defensive splits with and without Sean Lee are jaw-dropping. His presence or absence changes his defense maybe more than any other defender in the league.

We can't replace him, so we've really got no other choice to let him keep playing and let the injury chips fall where they may.
He has over 100 tackles 4 out of the last 5 years...... let the injury stuff go

I would draft him again in a heartbeat
