that depth took his spot, and with the amount he is getting paid...they were forced to plug him in other positions so as to not look foolish just outright releasing him...which is what needs to happen out of camp.

Man, you've got some serious hate coloring your perception. Dallas had to shift Crawford because we didn't have any ends better than what he could do there. Lawrence was suspended the first four games of 2016. Irving hadn't started showing his ability yet. I guess the team should have just outright released Crawford and started Ryan Russell at end. That would have been foolish. We were manning the right end spot with Jack Crawford and Mayowa, and Lawrence took that over when he came off suspension. Irving made two starts that year.

In 2017, we moved Lawrence back to left end and drafted Charlton to start at right end, but he wasn't ready. Damontre Moore ended up being suspended, so it was down to Mayowa and Tapper. Crawford was moved there because a lack of better options

We moved him to 3-tech in 2014 to back up Henry Melton, but he proved to be better than Melton and earned the starting job and his big contract. In 2015, he played through a torn rotator cuff and still finished with five sacks and 27 pressures as the team's starting 3-tech. Even at left end in 2016, he played through shoulder and hamstring injuries.

4 sacks last year to Taco's 3 at RDE. hardly solid

Taco is a defensive end. Crawford is not. He's a 3-tech or 3-4 end who has been forced to start at 4-3 end spots because he was better than our other options. I'd love for him to get moved back to 3-tech and be allowed to use his quickness at his best spot. Acquiring Ealy might help him do that, but someone has to step up as the starter at the end spot opposite Lawrence for him to be allowed to go back to DT.

Competition w/ Taco for RDE, Boise Boys rotate at LDE. Still wouldn't be th least bit surprised if they draft another DE.

Not exciting but I don’t mind 1 year depth signings like this at all. See what happens. Sometimes talent needs a new team!

Crawford is being undervalued in this thread. Tapper is a little also.

Tapper can't be "undervalued" when he essentially hasn't played for two years. If you're not on the field, how much value can you have?

How about run defense? Pressures? Working in tandem on stunts? Sacks are obviously important, but they aren't the end all for DL.
how about this

Crawford 29 tackles 4 sacks 9 assisted tackles 1 forced fumble
Taco 19 tackles 3 sacks 4 assisted tackles 1 forced fumble

I wish I knew the number of snaps of each player, but I would guess Crawford had at least a 3-1 advantage

Its been a decent pre-draft season so far.
They're securing some depth and allowi png themselves an easier go of it on draft day, to just draft honestly and not force anything.

"His inconsistent motor was a problem for a Patriots team that demands maximum effort at all times"

Not what I wanted to hear. But in rotation, maybe we can live with it.

A problem with many players. If he doesn't put forth enough effort he'd better be very talented as Marinelli will dump him otherwise. Being in a rotation as we do he'll have time to catch his breath. He has to make the 53 first. We'll get to see how in plays soon enough.

Entering his 5th NFL season and, counting a preseason with the Pats, where he couldn’t even crack the practice squad, we’re Ealy’s 4th team.

Rotational JAG at best.

1 Demarcus Lawrence
2 David Irving
3 Taco Charlton
4 Maliek Collins
5 Tyrone Crawford
6 Kony Ealy
7 Brian Price
8 Charles Tapper
9 Datone Jones
10 Richard Ash
11 Lewis Neal
12 Randy Gregory

Take a look at that list and what I see is the potential for a huge amount of turnover. If not this year, in 2019 for sure.

Demarcus Lawrence? Currently in the one year franchise tag.

David Irving? Tendered for one year at a second rounder. UFA in 2019.

Taco? He's here for the long haul.

Maliek Collins? Likely two more years at least.

Tyrone Crawford? Next year is when the team can get out of his contract if they choose.

Ealy is obviously on a one year deal.

Price is signed for two but nobody would be shocked if he were to be cut.

Charles Tapper hasn't been able to stay healthy in two years, if it happens again this year? Who knows?

Datone Jones has another year.

Ash and Neal are roster guys right now.

And it's anyone's guess what happens with Gregory.

There are a lot of names to be sure right now, but an awful lot of question marks as well. If not this year, the next.
