What opportunities will we have at 19

I think four QBs go above us in the first round. That leaves 14 position players who will go before we pick.

At #19 our board could be wiped out of true first round graded players, or there may be 3 or 4 still available. What if a QB is sitting there at #19 and someone wants to move back up into the first round to get one?

It is doubtful that someone who is drafting between #20 and #32 will come up for a QB (although the Patriots may make a move for a guy they really like). It would be beneficial to move back if our board is wiped out, but moving from #19 all the way out of the round would really be a kick in the gonads.

Presumably moving back that far would cost more than a second and third round pick. Would you move back to say #33 to #38 range for a second, third and next year's first?

IDK if it would be worth it or not, unless the team was expected to be drafting again in the top 10. I think that opportunity may arise. I just don't know if we would do it or not. I would probably pull the trigger on that if it involved next year's first and a 2nd and 3rd this year.

I keep seeing the need at linebacker driving mocks at #19. I don't think linebacker will be the BPA at #19.

What options do you guys think will be on the table at #19? I think Wynn, Vanderesch and Hernandez are long gone by the end of the first round. Moore, Sutton, and Ridley should also be long gone.

McGlinchey and Brown could also be gone by the end of the 1st. The cost of moving back more than 5 spots or so could completely change the landscape of the wrong players fly off the board.
On one hand, there will be lots of talent left when our turn comes up.
But will we pick smart?
And since 1997, hasn't our bane been an average of 8-8 seasons and picking in the middle of the pack?
Seems to me that mediocre seasons lead to mid draft, hence mediocrity.

Well said.

I like Vea, any player that can grab the center in one arm and the guard in the other and snag the running back on the way to the QB then throws them all on the QB for a sack is my guy!:omg:
I would forgive JJ for the past 20 years if they traded up for Vita Vea...

I can see Jerry moving up in the draft ...

At home, he might want to make noise...

If Dallas trades back in the first, they need to stay in the first. The four year rookie deal with a 5th year option is a great value.

Guard and OT can be had at 19 and I think that several will grade out as a 1st. Landry, Alexander, Daniels, Wynn, Hernandez and Vander Esch should each grade out as 1st rounders.

Payne, McGlinchey and Vea probably will grade out as 2nd round but each of those players can be day one starters and are significant improvement.

  • Harold Landry, DE
  • Jaire Alexander, CB
  • James Daniels, OC, Iowa
  • Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia
  • Will Hernandez, OG
  • Leighton Vander Esch, LB

  • Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame
  • Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
  • Vita Vea, DT, Washington

The Boys are sitting in a great spot in this draft with a possible 5 QBs being taken in front of them. I am expecting that the top two receivers will be gone as well. The team's first pick will be a stud. Give me any player from the above list and I will be all smiles.
I think the top two O lineman, two DTs, top two LBs, top two DB and top two RBs are gone also. I think Ridley goes and that is 16 players gone. Dallas may end up with the 2nd best WR or 3rd best of those positions taken.

I haven't looked at this years prospects as closely as usual but if he fell to us this guy sounds like he could make an immediate impact on the defense and he sounds like the kind of guy we target:

DA'RON PAYNE
Alabama
DT

Overview
Payne possesses one of the most impressive combinations of strength and athleticism that we've seen from an interior lineman. He will be the premier run-stuffer in this draft, but he may have enough in the pass rushing toolbox to project as a better pro than college pass rusher. Payne is a game-ready starter who immediately upgrades a defense's ability to slow the run. If teams view him as just a run-down player, then his draft value could fall a little, but he could become a Pro Bowl defender early in his career.

Strengths
  • Built like a wall of granite with exceptional lean muscle mass
  • Tremendous natural strength
  • Could bench press 400 pounds in high school
  • Run-stuffer deluxe with elite contact balance and body control
  • Only on the ground when making a tackle
  • Plays like a pro
  • Has feel for adjacent pressure against double teams
  • Quick to drop his anchor and grow roots
  • Typical Alabama technician at the position
  • Debilitating initial punch jars offensive linemen off their gameplan
  • Two-gaps with arm extension and his eyes in the backfield
  • Offenses simply shouldn't run at him
  • Eats blocks and keeps linebackers clean
  • Has to be schemed against
  • Hands and feet are full synced
  • Gifted athlete who showed marked improvement as rusher
  • Increased pressures from 15 to 27 this year
  • Fluid mover with above-average range to chase
  • Utilizes slap/arm-over to work around blocker's edge
  • Can walk interior linemen back into pocket with bullrush
  • Considered one of the most respected leaders during Saban era

OHH suuuuuure lets draft an unknown, kick out a 22 win in 2 season starter for a rookie untested, unknown and more then likely a bust Qb from the draft....see a pattern here? DUH

The more I look at it the more it scares me.

As it stands LB easily top "need".
I don't think a LB falls. Ro Smith and TE appear the cream f the crop and likely gone.
I see flaws with LVE and R.Evans that make me think they aren't top 20 guys.

Could argue WR easily as we could use a WR1 of the future but again I don't see an elite game breaking WR in this class at all.

Our 3rd biggest need may be OL but I don't see a Tyron Smith there and OG would ideally filled later. Drafting your 3rd best interior OL at 19 seems wild.

Safety is another spot you could snag a walk in starter. But the two guys they would value at 19 seems to be gone by 12 in most mocks.

DL is always a good bet and we love depth there. But Hurst has the heart concern and Landry is raw as rain. Those two go top 10 or could be there and we pass because teams know more than us.

To me it just seems the guys most likely to be there and expected to be top 20 players are not ideal so at this point so virtually every mock I do I'm wishing I could trade up or down, mostly down.

A first round grade and pick are two different things. Don't be an a** clown. All the players I listed will go in the first round. They all will not grade out as first round talent. Thus the difference between a grade and a pick. Vea is a two down player. He is not a Suh or Donald. Usually there are only 15 to 22 players that grade out as a first round talent. The same goes for 2nd round talent as well. The bulk of the players grade out as 3rd to 4th round talent. JAGs so to speak.

If Dallas drafts Vea in the first, I will be ecstatic. As I would for each of these players:
  • Harold Landry, DE
  • Jaire Alexander, CB
  • James Daniels, OC, Iowa
  • Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia
  • Will Hernandez, OG
  • Leighton Vander Esch, LB
    • Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame
    • Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
    • Vita Vea, DT, Washington
I will be very disappointed if we draft OL in the first. We need to make due with a later round pick or a quality FA for at least 1 of our Oline positions. That is just too much draft value for your Oline - you have to spread it around a bit. I would not mind moving up for Edmunds but that is the only player I move up for. He is probably the only true difference maker for our team this coming year - maybe DaRon Payne if we stay put. I liked Roquan early on but he got a bit swallowed up in the Bowl game - his size is a question mark

Jerry Jones ain't going to get any younger and this team has good players. I say go big. Trade up to stay in 1st after selecting 19. Give up 1st round and 2nd next year. Give up 2nd, 3rd and 4th to go high in 2nd.
I am glad you are not in the Cowboys war room. Next year all we would have is 7th rounders.

I would have been 100% with you on this 5 years ago and may still be there BUT....
This team's identity is it's OL. You don't band-aid your identity.
As a coach you often are looking to find what you do best then do it better than anyone else.
For Dallas in 2016 that was OL play. I don't mind using another R1 to ensure that occurs again in 2018.
If Dak and Zeke are the two most important players on the team I have zero issue drafting a guy that makes them both better every play.
Using a draft pick is one way to keep costs down. Draft picks outside early R1 are cheap for years.

I could easily argue a starting RG has more impact on this offense than a WR would.
So for me if we look offense and there's no elite TE it pretty much has to be OL.
Defense has alot more options but again I need value. I'm not reaching for a LB at 19 if they are rated well below the OL.

.

If there is a QB on the board that the Patriots are so confident that he is a replacement for Brady that they are trading up - you draft that QB.
