Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Uh, he couldn't have made this decision before the draft?

The odd timing might be(?) because Witten and ABC/ESPN have just now agreed on the MNF job.

Color-man for MNF is the most prestigious such job in the business, and JW would be a fool to turn down a $erious offer.

Besides...how do we know that the Cowboys FO haven’t been quietly sitting on this and might already have been planning for life after Witten?

Dez was our big play receiver which is why he got targeted so much. He could turn a short pass into a big gain. There isn’t anyway to put a positive spin on losing both Dez and Witten who were one and two in TDs last season with 11 scores. That was half of Dak’s TD pass total. It’s going to be hard for a rookie TE or WR to make an impact in 2018. We’ve set ourselves up for a rough 2018 season unless the defense is great and the offense ends up better than it looks on paper.

We currently have very little at the skill positions. We were stacked offensively a few years ago and right now the offense doesn’t look good. Zeke is the only real weapon we have. Every opponent is going to be bent on stacking the box and stopping him. They’re going to try and force Dak and our receivers to beat them.

We have Beasley, maybe coaches can get Swizter and his speed on the field more, Hurns when healthy produces. TWill is up and down, yes. We most likely will get a TE/Wr in the 2nd and or 3rd. We aren't devoid of skill players. We just need Dak/Zeke to show what they did in 2016 and our OL to not be up and down like last year.

Without him we were nothing. We were rolling at the time he was suspended and the season went into the toilet the next 3 games without him. Our entire offense revolves around him and the running game. With our average receiving corp we’ll be even more dependent on him in 2018.
OL is the key. Zeke is a product of the line. Cowboys weren’t good vs Denver and Seattle with him.

Wow didn't see that coming. Surely the team knew of this before the draft.

Probably for the best, but still sad to see him go. Guy is all-time as both a player and a professional. He'll be missed. Just wish we could've won him a ring (thanks Jerrah).

Hats off to a legendary career. Next stop: DC Ring of Honor and Canton, Ohio.

Who is good? Philly, LA and Minny? 3 of 16 teams can play offense and defense.
Green Bay, Detroit, Dallas, New Orleans, Carolina. Tampa will be much improved as will San Fran and the Giants. I can see every team in the NFC with a chance of making the playoffs with the exception of Washington, Chicago, Arizona, and maybe Seattle.

ESPN is doing a documentary on Witten right now. How’d they already put this together if he just retired today?

What kind of documentary? If it's a brief look at his career with a few comments from people who know him, that's a breeze given today's technology.

I refuse to believe Witten, the class act, betrayed the Cowboys by bailing on them this late in the process. Really surprising if true.

Would it matter to you if the MNF offer wasn't made until this late in the process? It would to me. I don't blame him for taking the MNF offer, so the timing of the offer is key in my mind.
