I get that the contract wasn't a good one for the team, but that's not a reason to hate on the guy.

And I don't think anyone "hates on the guy", they hate on the poor return on investment, not the person.

Plus, people overstate how much he really got paid. He got 5/$45 with $17MM guaranteed. That's a lot, but it's not ridiculous. For example the two "elite" salaries closest to him at his position go to Jerry Hughes (BUF) and Derek Wolfe (DEN).

And the Cowboys immediately doubled down on the bad contract by reworking it and getting locked in. And now, Crawford will see most, if not all of that $45 million without ever having been a top player, or even having carved out a true role for himself.

Again, not all his fault, but not untrue either.

Nah, people hate on the guy. I recognize that's not what you're doing here, but it happens because every time it does I read it and think 'why would people not like a decent player just because of his contract?' I felt the same way about Brandon Carr--who was badly overpaid and who the team repeatedly tried to renegotiate with. They're good, hardworking dudes who took advantage of the market and who had options. More power to them.

Anyway, there are 53 contracts on a team. Some are great deals for the team, some are great deals for the players. The contracts are unilateral, though, so the ones that favor the players heavily can be cut at any time like we just saw with Dez. Crawford at least plays at a relatively high level, moves wherever the team needs him to without complaint, and plays through injury. I believe the team likes the guy a lot more than the fans do and considers him one of the leaders on the defense. For every Crawford or Carr out there, there's a Dez or a Zack Martin whose deals offset the others.

I agree that the team likes him, but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't ask him to take a paycut if they could. They did as soon as they could with the aforementioned Brandon Carr, and they would with Crawford too.

I hope they do. It’d be like it was for Doug Free where he want from everybody hating on him to people liking him again when he takes a pay cut.

Although Crawford has more leverage than Free right now.

I'd actually prefer it if they could work out a paycut deal that allows Crawford to retire a Cowboy at this point rather than just cutting him.

The team has enough defensive line questions looming already.

Great minds think alike.
;)

It's kind of like these college players the team drafts in the later round where everybody says their production would have been better but they were playing out of position. Crawford as a DE is a decent player. He can hold the spot down if you don't have anyone else who deserves to start. At tackle, he's a player who is an asset to the rotation even if you have other quality DTs.

I'll put it another way: If you subbed in Crawford for Lawrence at end, the offense has a pretty decent advantage because Crawford isn't the same kind of rusher from the edge. Inside, if you subbed Crawford for Irving, the offense still has a good interior pass rusher to deal with.

T Crawford, like it or not, is one of the best defensive linemen on the team. When he played DT, he was a starter. When they move him to DE, he is a starter. It's not his fault no one can beat him out. We actually have a ton of bodies for DT, especially the 3-tech, so I think it makes perfect sense to keep him at DE. Besides DLaw, who's going to play at DE? Maybe Taco, maybe Ealy, maybe Armstrong, Tapper, Jones? That's a lot of maybes and wannabees. Crawford has proven he can stop the run at DE and bring pressure; gaining a little quickness may also result in sacks.

In my mind the best front four we have is still
DLaw -- Collins -- Irving -- Crawford

until the young guys can prove it or take his position away. In passing situations, maybe one of the young kids comes in at DE and Crawford moves inside for Collins. At least we have lots of possibilities across the DL this year, and if Crawford ever drops out of the rotation or someone proves to be just as good, then we can stop whining about his contract.

He's a top player for the Cowboys....there's no denying that until we find a kid who can take that spot from him.
