Defensive tackle David Irving returned to the Cowboys after missing organized team activities. He continues to try to straighten out his personal life, which is a work in progress.

“It feels great to be back out there working with my boys,” Irving said in a quick soundbite to the media Tuesday. “I had a lot of stuff going on in the offseason as you all know, and I’m working through it the best that I can and put it behind me and focus on the season.”

He risked an $84,435 for missing the entire minicamp.

Irving is in a custody dispute with his ex-girlfriend, Angela Sanchez, over their 5-year-old daughter. He recently was investigated by police for domestic violence allegations, which Sanchez later recanted.

Everyone has “personal problems”. Everyone.

Not everyone is unable to continue their commitment to being a professional because of their personal problems. There are probably a dozen Cowboys players currently fighting through some big personal or family issues and somehow they are able to stay in shape, be on time, and remain completely capable of doing their job well.

This kind of stuff is why David Irving should not get a second contract. This kind of unreliability is a fundamental flaw that should prevent the Cowboys from staying committed to Irving. He has talent, but it takes a lot more than talent to be a successful professional athlete.

I have a slightly different opinion. I work in analytics in upper management. In short I have experience in managing people. I have had success in being patient, helping and mentoring young people as in David’s case. He is young and has not experienced the ups and downs in life as of yet. I find that helping and mentoring these young individuals, I have build great relationships with and earned some real loyalty along the way. Hell its probably the number one reason why I have risen to upper management.

With that said, if David was an older adult I would have zero patience. He should have matured along the way and I just don’t have the time to deal with problem adults. But that he is not!

I would be patient and work toward helping the young man!

Getting someone that toxic out of his life is big but difficult step. Hopefully this will help him concentrate on football and earn a long term spot on the team. He's an incredible talent, the way he took over the 2016 Bucs game still amazes. me

That is what Garrett says and you have to segment that out, focus on football when you come to work so you can be the best you can be, and then concentrate on the problems. Garrett needs to get his RKG in line.

As a father...if this guy is trying to do the best he can in this situation to take care of his kid then I'll have all the support and patience in the world with him.

Sounds like the gf is nuts and he is trying to get the situation resolved so he can be a good father...sign me up for that one I'm on his team all day...just don't get suspended for peds and keep straight...

completely disagree with this. none of us know what is happening with his child and if she is struggling and having problems then he needs to be with her especially in the off season.

try and get that straightened out so he can be the best he can be during the season and not have to struggle with it.

hope david and daughter get all the help they need and can overcome it...

He needs camp and he needs to be ready for regular season
So hopefully he can get this behind him quickly and learn from it
I’m not gonna judge a man fighting for his kids
That said I suspect this will be his last year as a cowboy and that’s a shame because the guy is super talented

can't think of any profession that would be cold in their response to a guy needing help, military, engineering, retail, management, etc.

Pampering of players is unreal... this is a common issue for many individuals in this country and they can’t let it effect their work

Dude have your lawyer handle it and put your head in the game and let the lawyer do what he’s paid for.. if he can’t handle it pay someone who will make it easy for you

Not everyone is in a custody fight for a child with an ex accusing them of domestic abuse.

Life and family before team.

He obviously had judgment issues in the past. He may actually be cleaning up his life now.
I agree that family is first. But I also believe he is not out of shape because of a custody battle. All of us should put Family first. But you should also be able to take better care of yourself than he has. All I’m saying is David Irving is not the only guy on that team with problems. Most of the others somehow are able to keep their conditioning expectations through their personal issues.
