Jerry is only handing out big contracts to The Oline.

The O-linemen that got big contracts had a history both of excellence and dependability. Had Lawrence averaged 12-14 sacks a year up till now he would get the same treatment.

Nope. I’d franchise him 1 more year and let him walk.
That is 37m in cash and cap space for only 2 years

If you extend him at 5/80m it works out like this

2018 ....5m cap hit
2019.....1m cap hit(after 12m in space rolled over)
2020......9m cap hit
2021......17m cap hit if kept or cut
2022......CUT......17m Dead Money

screw that his name is Lawrence not Ware. do it again or hit the road. I'm thinking he gets the tag again But if he does do it again anywhere between 13-20 sacks and is a disruptive force Jerry will probably need to pay the piper. 5 years is a bit much though he isnt a franchise QB

How much guaranteed is in your calculation? I'll defer to your expertise.

Only complete season was a contract season, and a very good one, but they should wait. See what Charelton, Tapper and Ganjory can do. If Lawrence turns out to be the only good DE, he will get paid and the search for DT's will be on. I believe by the time this season gets at the halfway point, we are going to be screaming for DT's.

Lawrence is sitting in a good position because he was a Booger risk and he is not likely to let that reward go too easily.

Do we know this? Do we know what he is willing to take for a 5 year deal? He may be thinking about an annual salary along the lines of what he would get with the franchise tag this year, and if so, that wouldn't constitute any kind of discount at all for his lack of dependability the last 4 years.

As for the idea of worrying about consequences later and thinking contracts are easy to get out from under, that's the thinking that causes teams to get into a major problem with the salary cap. A responsible team can't afford to think that way.
Well if that's what he's expecting then he's probably going to just get franchise tagged every year.

What teams are in major cap problems? Because I hear this every year and watch teams spend ridiculously without any consequence.

5/80m with 30m initially guaranteed and another 15m guaranteed next March

Lowers his cap hit from 17m to 5m with a 20m signing bonus.......rollover the 12m in savings to 2019 and his cap hit is only 1m next year
This..^^^ .. next year.

They’re going to talk next week his representatives and the cowboys. He wants 5 years. I think we do work something out. Help us w space and also if he did go off again next season his contract would be insane.

That's crazy. And then what? Go to the defensive end store and purchase a All pro defensive end?

That's assuming he is an all pro. He's only produced like that once, and has an injury history with his back. The odds are that he has already peaked.

If that's him at his peak last season? I'm fine with that. He was one of the best players in the league last year.

What's our cap hit should we cut him in 2020? Thinking if he did struggle with injuries 2020 would possibly be the earliest they cut him, or designate as a june 1st cut.

His 15m salary would be guaranteed if he made it thru 2018

Cutting him wouldn't be feasible but his first two cap hits were 5m and a Net 1m......why would we cut him?

I wouldn’t call them one hit wonders. One album wonders, yes. That entire album from start to finish is good. There was no FFing to skip songs when you put that tape in the boombox.

Agree, but that one song which is one of my favorites is the one people remember and played on the radio.

Nope, Irving gets the franchise tag next year, not Lawrence. D-Law gets paid. And if it comes down to paying one or the other, D-Law is a much better football player than Quack.
There’s no chance in hell Irving gets the franchise tag.

That is the risk with every player....... it is a 2 year risk window....he has a 17m risk window right now and a 20m risk window next year with the Franchise Tags.....is 2 years and 30m that different for a stud DE?

Teams can always get insurance for 50k per 1m.......get a 10m policy for 500k if that worried...... It is tax free so the player makes out and the salary is rebated back against the cap

I would much rather have 4 years low paid over 5-6 years compared to 2 year highly paid over 2 years

Up until recent years the Cowboys had serious salary cap problems. Teams that can afford to spend are ones that manage the cap well. Managing the cap doesn't mean they never spend big money, it just means they are smart about it, and they consider not only the immediate impact of every signing, but the effect it will have in the future. Teams that are able to stay in decent shape under the salary cap can't and don't just throw caution to the wind and say "we'll worry about it later".

I think what you have to remember is the Cowboys are one team, whereas when you talk about other teams spending ridiculously you are talking about an overview of the entire NFL - the remaining 31 teams. Some of the signings get a lot of attention for the player involved and the price tag, but that's not every team doing that every year.
