News: BTB: Why last year doesn’t matter in the NFL and why it’s okay to be optimistic

If you are implying that this is a permanent condition that would contradict the laws of impermanence.
What it tells you is that if the Cowboys make the NFC Championship Game it will be in spite of the coaching staff rather than having their coaches helping them to get there. Which is the way it is supposed to be.

no it doesn't pure BS

Last year was an aberration in the sense that the Dallas OL had an absurd number of problems with injuries and poor depth at LG and OT. This year will afford them and the offense in general an opportunity to rebound from that mess. It'll be a new year with all the ups and downs that it offers. It should be encouraging to see that the defense has a real opportunity to excel as well. It's a challenge, just like every year in the NFL. We'll do better in 2018.

Garrett will have another 5 years to prove you right after he gets a huge contract extension after the next 8-8 season.

I tell you what might be a possibility. JJones does a "prove it" extension with Garrett. Lets say a 2 year deal.
At the end of two if Garrett hasn't meet the parameters Jones team just doesn't extend his contract.
Thats with the understanding that 2018-19 teams makes a acceptable showing.
I think this current team is fully Garrett's baby and all the weight and credit are on his shoulders.

I personally believe we make it to the tournament and win a game. Its over due.

As will the NFC South. A Wild Card birth will be a very difficult task this year.

It would actually benefit the Cowboys if a team like the 49'ers or Cardinals get to the next level this year and are part of the WC mix. It'd help saddle their NFC North opponents with an extra loss. That and the Giants & Commanders improve to do the same with the NFC South teams.

Could be the difference between needing 10 wins instead of 11.

so JJ needs to do a prove it deal to a guy who keeps proving he cant do it. For what, in the hopes he can do it in the 2 years? Thats nonsense. JG keeps proving he cant do it and the only 2 people who believes he can do it is the Jones family and happy fans. if JG still cant get it done, he cant get it done. Not everyone can win at the the highest possible level and I dont think a team who keeps trying to pose as winners should have the mantra " well we ll get it one of these years"

How about JJ proves to us he wants to win and comes down from the tower onto the sidelines with the cameras on and tells Jason, "this is your prove it year" THan i ll buy into the fact he wants to win.

Why does anyone need an okay to be optimistic and why rain on the parade of those that are? What the hell makes those not optimistic want to bring those down that are? The pleasure of pessimism?

In an conference that hasn't had a repeat winner in two seasons in the divisions and a division that hasn't had one in 13 seasons, the past does not dictate the future.

Objectively, I see these teams better than the Cowboys on paper and healthy: PHL, GB, MIN, NO, ATL and LAR. I see the Cowboys in the next group with AZ, CAR, SEA and maybe SF if their QB is for real.

One thing about the Cowboys and this season, there are enough unknowns to supply enough for optimism or pessimism, it is simply a choice.

But this anger towards Garrett fueling pessimism does not take into account that he's had two 13 win seasons out of the last four and could have another this season because no one predicted those other two.

You tell me the Cowboys are going to stay healthy and my Optimeter needle is going pretty good. The lack of quality depth and what happens when just one or two key players is out keeps my needle in the neutral zone.

Anything can happen in the NFL. Every new NFL season is always a new chance for teams that fell short of the playoffs the season before. The NFL is intrinsically designed to be a parity-driven league; the draft, revenue sharing, the salary cap, compensatory draft picks, even the schedule; everything about the NFL is designed so that every team from every market has a legit opportunity to compete year-in and year-out.

Fact is, the ‘competitive balance’ in the league gives each team hope of finishing at the top of the standings regardless of its record the previous season. Sometimes for no other reason than that other teams in the division are even worse. In the NFL, this is called parity.

Yet you wouldn’t notice that if you were to look at the majority of season outlooks published at this time of the year, as most of them seem to do little more than copy last year’s standings and add a little “surprise” here or there.

Case in point: SI.com’s Prediction for every NFL team’s 2018 season record published last month. It’s a 5,800+ word missive in which author Jonathan Jones boldly declares that “next season’s playoffs will probably look a lot like last season’s,” and has all eight division champions from 2017 repeating in 2018.

Additionally, the NFC East hasn't had back to back division champs since 2004. Thus, this division is wide open. I'd rather take an optimistic approach for our season than a pessimistic approach. Could we miss the playoffs? Sure. Could we win the Super Bowl? Sure! Do we know what will happen? Nope! In fact, if the World Cup taught us anything, you can't really predict sports, can you?

Oh it could be nonsense your right I just through some thing out there cause I know JJones doesn't want to get rid of Garrett.
I think it'd be a hoot.

sometimes you can. the problem is people dont want to hear it. Last year some of us told the board, dont get excited, nothing is going to happen. Bam, nothing happened.

on that part i agree, we just differ on the reason why he loves Garrett so much. But yes i agree he doesnt want rid of Garrett.

If they really wanted parity, they'd give the last place team in the division the option to swap either their offense or defense with the division champion.

Just send Tom Brady to the Browns and Aaron Rodgers to the Cardinals.
