Earl Thomas will be a Cowboy by Mid August- Book it

This is one of the reasons a deal could be done, but could turn into a reason for the deal not to be done.

Dallas gets an opportunity in camp to take a long look at its safeties before August. If Woods balls out at free safety, then the need to go after Thomas diminishes although we would still have either Frazier or Heath at strong safety, which I don't consider ideal. Thomas is an All-Pro free safety, so I don't think we would want to get him to play strong safety.

I agree that this is a consideration, but I think it could go either way in terms of leverage. If reports on Woods are good, Dallas' leverage grows, possibly as you said to the point where they think that Woods can do the job and they don't need Thomas at all.

Or, if reports are bad, Seattle will know that and their leverage remains and asking price remains high.

It will be interesting to see if the Seahawks wait so long as to allow the Cowboys to find out.

By the time the Hawks are a playoff threat again ET will be 32 or 33 years old.

It's interesting that Seattle knocked the Cowboys out of playoff contention 8 months ago, finished with the same record as Dallas (thanks to Philly sitting half of their team), yet you think the Cowboys can win the Super Bowl this season while Seattle is 3-4 years away.

Why fans think we can’t win a super bowl is beyond me.

How have the Cowboys improved so much, and the Seahawks fallen so hard, since December? Suddenly they have no reason to keep ET and while the Cowboys are an ET trade away from winning it all?

Okay, who’s on meth right now and who’s the insomniacs? :D

Earl for a third and fifth all day, but I want Tank locked up, first. I don’t think we can fit both under the cap. Maybe @Nightman could shed some light?
We can easily add EThomas

He will get another 4/42m and we are 50m under next year

All we have due is DLaw for 2019..... I think we move on from D Irving and it def won't be big money

Dak isn't big until 2020 and Zeke until 2021..... we have plenty of room

What if you are wrong about Richard, maybe he is the one holding the trade up. He obviously knows more insider info than anyone. He maybe looking to the future of the Cowboys when he becomes DC next year.

Agree 100%. Keeping him sends a valuable message to the rest of the Seahawks roster. Bringing him in to the Cowboys locker room sends a horrible message to a number of players playing for below market value salaries.

Interesting take...
I think people are missing the old player for player trade

We will have an excess of DE, TE and RB...... get something instead of waiving good players

ET is the key to a superior D

yeah, thats certainly an intriguing thought....maybe a player +6th rounder...not sure who though, RB sounds like we will have an extra...TE's are unproven so unlikly to get much there....DE we need the depth...maybe Oline since we got williams?

Do you have any specific players in mind? I'm rooting for Terrance Williams to be included, but I'm nit sure that anyone else values him, especially at this point.

Charles Tapper might make some sense as well though again, I'm not sure if he has any value to the Seahawks.

ESPN listed possible trading partners. But none of them have the combination of need and available funds that the Cowboys have.

Dallas can get this done for a third round pick... The other trading partners will be scared off or dissuaded. Seattle has no leverage and a compelling need to move on.

Unless Dallas has changed their mind* this will happen. Terms will be a third round pick—perhaps slightly sweetened.

So let me summarize:
T-Ro says this:
Seattle will trade Thomas to Dallas between August 5 and August 20. The trade will be a third round pick, perhaps slightly sweetened.

*Possible
Won't Seattle get a 3rd round compensatory pick by just letting him hit free agency next off-season? If so, why would they trade him for one? The only positive for them in this regard would be that a trade would give them a 3rd round pick next year whereas letting him walk in free agency next off-season would net them a third round comp pick in 2020. That's the ONLY reason I see them considering this. They would save his salary for this season, but why would they care? It doesn't affect them going forward.

A Comp 3rd is his ceiling but that is not until 2020 at best and it is really a 4th..... so a 5th next year

So present value would be a 6th this year

Maybe Jarwin or Rico or TWill like you said

Kony Ealy or Tapper on D

I spelled it correctly 50% of the time on page 1. That’s an A grade when posting after midnight. :)

As for “mentoring younger players” ... you want a leader on your team who has repeatedly been vocal about wanting to play somewhere else?
Having previously spelled it correctly only makes it worse when you spell it wrong because you knew better and did it anyway.

As for your question, the answer when context is included is, "yes". ET's main issue at his current location is he wants to get paid appropriately. When the pay comes around, so will his concern about where he is.

Very true.

I also think Dallas hopes to have players worth offering at the end of the preseason (as well as a lower pick) in order to mitigate the price. There are a few positions where this might be the case. So there are several things that could affect whether Dallas and Seattle work out a deal.

The most interesting aspect to me right now is Thomas' decision to hold out, if he follows through. I believe both teams still have the possibility of a trade in mind, but Thomas holding out could force Seattle to rush it a little. The Seahawks don't have to do anything and can just let him stew, but I don't know how interested Seattle is in doing that.

I agree. We'll see if they have the stomach for it.

I can see Prescott holding out next year. He's been way underpaid, even by rookie salary standards.
If Dak plays lights out this season, he won't even have to mention holdout. Jerry would knock his Johnny Walker clean over to get that man signed to a long term contract. If he repeats the debacle that was last season, well knowing Jerry, he will still do the same.

I think that this is the determining year for his deal, and I think that's the way it should be.

If he proves he's the guy we thought he was in 2016? I think the Cowboys will gladly pay him among the tops at the position, easily in the $25 million a year range.

If he shows that he's more of the guy we saw down the stretch in 2017? Holding out would do him more harm that good I think. A player coming off of consecutive bad years isn't in position to threaten anybody.

I think this is a career-defining year for Dak Prescott, and given all of the factors and the ramifications, I think that's exactly how it should be.
Way to find someone elses off-topic post and running with it. Great post by you, by the way.

Man you are on it!

I really hope it happens. It would cap off a decent offseason so far. Late, but a good ending.

Seattle wants more than a 3rd round pick or Thomas would already be on his way with the rest of the team to Oxnard. He's simply not worth more than a 3rd to me due to his age and recent injury history.
