Hes probably not an nfler. Its fine. They spent a 6th round pick on a guy with huge upside but was never likely to hit it. It was worth the gamble. But I think its pretty clear now in year 3 hes not going to be a starter or a special teams contribute.

I watched ALL of TE Rico Gathers highlights last year before his unfortunate injury and he played "lights out"! He is a man child. Dude can run with a huge body and big hands like no one else. He cannot be covered!

Recently, Coach Garrett mentioned ALL tight ends on the team EXCEPT Rico to the media. I smell a BIG RAT, in the respect that Rico is INDEED Coach Garretts "Favorite TE"

on the team! I personally believe, the coach got upset with Rico claiming to be so great on twitter....bragging etc. before he had actually done anything. I like what the coach is doing, getting his attention to focus on the team and keep humble.

From Todd Archer: The good of Rico Gathers: he made a nice adjustment on a back-shoulder throw from Cooper Rush. The bad of Rico Gathers: He had a false start in the final compete period and was sent to the sideline.

Rico is having a very good camp so far, and I believe his only downside is experience and focus. If he can stay mentally focused on the field (i.e. NO off sides/missed routes etc.) and keep out of the media then our coach has HUGE RICO plans this year!

Am I Crazy for thinking this way?

GO COWBOYS SUPER BOWL BOUND!

Rico looked great last preseason...playing against future grocery baggers and burger flippers.

One of my favorite oxymorons...preseason highlights.

He's alarmingly slow and plodding. I can't imagine him ever being more than a red zone contested catch receiver. Throw it up and let him go get it like Dez used to.

Plus he's just buried here with Swaim, Jarwin and Schultz.
Being "buried" under those names plays into his favor. I can't recall a worse te group.

Rico is 275 lbs, knows how to use his size to leverage routes, and combines that with hands and body control that are much better than average. We know that just from watching him last year. The guy got open and caught a lot of balls as CRush's favorite pass target.

We haven't seen him block this year so we will see but your banking on him not improving at all with those comments. He might surprise you.

Rico weighed 265 when drafted. Last month there were a number of reports that he'd gained 20 pounds. Story here:

One can be quite sure the Cowboys coaches weren't asking him to gain that weight!

If he can contribute more than the other tight ends then I'd like him to make the team. Prospects of that happening don't look good.

Add blocking to that red zone contested catch, and he's a valuable player.

It was always about the blocking for Rico.

Without the blocking, he's a slow, plodding WR who can't run routes but has soft hands and a large catch radius. Gavin Escobar who can't run routes. Like Rico, Escobar should have got big and learned how to block.

Still not too late for Rico, but he's a bad fit here where we have so many developmental TEs.

Rico only played against 3rd string scrubs last preseason. Being impressed by them not being able to cover him is hilarious. He's still 4th TE in the depth chart on this team so... don't bet on him.

Rico can’t run. He lumbers. He doesn’t run routes correctly, rounded cuts off. He was already hefty for the position and then he put on 20 lbs. He has trouble mastering his assignments and he can’t technically get his blocking skills together. It’s 10 to 1 he won’t make the team
He barrels...and it looks painful to stop

His one compelling attribute as a receiver is perhaps that he can create a physical mismatch, shield the ball. Perhaps carry defenders for extra yardage after a catch.

The guy probably runs a 4.9 40...if that. He ran a pre-draft 4.79 but that was without the extra weight. Now he might be +5.0 40 time.

Man! As thrilling of a rocket launched hole shot it would be in having him ' be the man' for that position, I'm just not tuning in on the cosmic interface of that happening at the present,we'll all know by the second camp cut whose standing where.

If he gets placed on the practice squad, be prepared to see him get snatched up and tear it up for another team.

Yeah, a lurking fear for all of us I believe. These fundamental issues (route running, assignments, speed, potential commitment to the game) will crop up on another team right?

Is another HC willing to put up with that for the handful of red zone attempts he will see a game?

The false start penalty today makes me worry about his focus in addition to the aforementioned concerns.

They"ll convert him to OT if he doesnt show much at TE. He's the new Jamiel Showers - no real position.
