For Dallas Cowboys, coaching could be the key to 2018

Well, that escalated quickly.

A couple of weeks ago, hopes for the Dallas Cowboys this season were founded to a great degree on re-establishing the dominance of their offensive line, anchored of course by the three All-Pros, Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Zack Martin. Now, two of those three pillars face health issues. Martin is uncertain for the season opener against the Carolina Panthers after the (apparently minor) injury to his knee against the Cincinnati Bengals. Frederick’s status for the entire season is up in the air after he was diagnoses with Guillain Barre Syndrome. He remains optimistic he will play at some point this season, but barring a truly remarkable rebound, he is probably going to miss at least a few games, and putting him on IR with the opportunity to bring him back is one option the team will consider

Thus depression and despair ensue for Cowboys fans everywhere. Just look at the line the team was using in practice, with Smith (up to now the O linemen with the most health concerns) taking one of his off days to manage his back.

One tweak to Smith in practice, and this could be a reality in a regular season game. Or, maybe it could be even worse.

Suddenly, a somewhat overlooked hire, offensive line coach Paul Alexander, may be the most important man on the staff. He will be tasked with getting the most out of players like Joe Looney, Kadeem Edwards (gulp), Cam Fleming, and Chaz Green (just shoot me now), as well as bringing along rookie Connor Williams. He also will help integrate any new linemen brought in.

Jason’s only two playoff appearances were preceded by significant injuries before the season started—Sean Lee in 2014 and Tony Romo in 2016.

I’m not saying Fred’s injury is a harbinger of playoffs. I’m pointing out that the coaching staff is much better adjusting to injury when it happens early.

It's a pretty truthful statement. Injuries are a part of football and the better coaches typically can adjust on the fly.

If Frederick is a longer term issue, and we are dealing with the knee and back of Martin and Smith, respectively, in order for this team to succeed it will fall on the coaches to be able to adjust and compensate.

We'll see if they are up to task.

this kind of stuff happens almost every year to most team. Coaching is important EVERY year. People don't notice it because Garrett never does anything coach smart or blow us away with is abilities. So some don't know what they are missing.

First off, with Looney starting, the only current backup linemen on the roster that I see sticking are tackle Cam Fleming and guard Kadeem Edwards. They're going to have to get a guard/center backup from somebody else's cuts and then look for another tackle- perhaps trade for one.

The Chaz Green experiment has to end. I wouldn't even mention him here. His confidence is shot; and that would doom him even without all the injuries he's had. The sad part is I think he's a talented player; but it may take a change of scenery to snap him out of that Atlanta game last season.

If the team struggles this season I hope Jerruh realizes it was on the coaching staff... losing players via FA and unforseen things like Fred happen to every team in the league..
