this group is far from elite....but I think they are one of those units that teams cant ignore, but won't game plan defensively like a gronk, witten in his prime, etc. keep in mind that witten was in decline over the past 3 years and painfully obvious the last two years, so its not like we had any real TE...no offense to Witten. he is going to be a first ballot HOF, regardless of the last two years...Many are seeing disaster, saying things like the team doesn't have a TE who can catch passes, the team doesn't know how to use and TEs, and the team won't use this group of TEs, but is that really what we've seen this preseason?
To begin with, the team has played without its elite RB and most of the time without its starting QB and elite O-Line. And they have played without game planning.
Yet the TEs have caught 23 passes for 176 yards in 3 games. Not a particularly exciting ypc average, but significant yardage, and a sizable part of the offense. Overall, I would say it's a nice sign for a unit with all the things going against it mentioned in the paragraph above.
Regular season will include the starting QB, the elite RB, the elite O-Line (minus one), game plans, and no need to play everyone just for the sake of getting a look at them. With those benefits it's not at all unreasonable that the TEs could get a similar number of catches, and increase the ypc number 2-3 yards per catch. That would be a significant and sizeable contribution to the offense.
That's why I think they should be used less on passing downs. Not sure why people are worried about the TEs. The biggest question for them is whether or not they can block in the two TE sets. They aren't going to be big contributors in the passing game, but we're not going to need or expect them to be, either.
I'd take an Antonio Gates. An athletic veteran who could coach some AtleticismIf it were me it'd be Rico and Swaim.
Jarwin and Shultz would be cut and I'd be trading for the best TE I could find.
Nothing, with a capital N, should be based on preseason. Many are seeing disaster, saying things like the team doesn't have a TE who can catch passes, the team doesn't know how to use and TEs, and the team won't use this group of TEs, but is that really what we've seen this preseason?

The first one... I have lost all faith in Garrett and Linehan game planning. I don't think they do, or know how to game plan for anything.
The #1 TE seems pretty clear-cut to me. Jarwin can't block a Girl Scout, Rico doesn't know what route he's running, and Schultz looks worse than both of them.
Swaim would probably be the #3 TE on most teams, but folks, he's your 2018 starter.
Let's be honest. The only reason you'd say Rico is no good is because of what we heard about him not making the correct blocks and stuff like that. I haven't heard any thing lately about him running bad routes.
38 years old.I'd take an Antonio Gates.
Just 2 years ago with a healthy Tyron and Zeke not suspended the Cowboys were the 5th highest scoring team in the league. The first one... I have lost all faith in Garrett and Linehan game planning. I don't think they do, or know how to game plan for anything.

By the way, five NFL teams had their top TE's total receptions at 25 or less and two of them, the Saints and Jaguars, were playoff teams.
well I believe in this case you are wrong, they game plan pretty well, get a lot of leads by halftime, their issue is they dont do well in in game adjustments to readjust once teams have either figured out how to stop them or players arent executing and we lose the lead, bad in game adjustments for sure..
