Cowboys have 19.3 million in cap space

And if they spent all that money on FA players you would whine they were over paid and we do not have any cap room next year to sign our own players. Or other players to get better.

No I wouldn’t. They have clear weak spots that need to be addressed, the money to do it, and players at those positions have been available throughout the entire process yet here we are with no moves to improve anything. By the way, if they spend every penny, they still have 70+ million in cap space next year.

The rookie contract formula has proven to work. You go all in when you have a qb on his rookie deal. What are you saving the $ for ? I don’t know about you but I’ve waited long enough 23 years.

And they haven’t done a single thing to improve the team. Seriously, all they are going to do is churn the bottom of the roster and keep Rush at backup QB? They deserve to have a bad year. People don’t want to hear it but money now rules every decision they make. Winning is not the prime directive.

I would agree with you if we weren't always able to do whatever we want in free agency all the time.

So for the last 6-8 years, they have taken action to keep us moving forward to a day where we would not have to restructure 7 contracts a year just to sign some low level FA and the rookie class. Now after all that work, you want to bash them managing the cap correctly? Who is currently available on the QB front that would be instantly better than the 2 we have? I think there are a few I would look at but I don't know that any of the FA QB right now would be a significant upgrade over Rush.

With the release of Dan Bailey, the Cowboys have $19.3 million in cap space, according to ESPN Stats & Information. There appears to be no news regarding a potential trade for Earl Thomas and early talks with Cole Beasley on an extension have not progressed. The Cowboys could carry over most of that cap room into 2019 with DeMarcus Lawrence set to be a free agent and Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott eligible to sign a long-term deals for the first time.

I can't remember us having this much at the beginning of the season before.

Odd.

Something is going on for sure.

And remember one thing about this free agency spending thing and I learned this from our Director of Personnel/Capologist this offseason. We should feel fortunate we don't have to go out and make the kinds of moves other teams do in free agency. It's one of the benefits of drafting so well.

That seems to be the theme.

Hope is now sold in terms of things being different than they have been.

Continuity used to be the theme. Now it is "embrace the youth".

I have to admit, the Cowboys organization knows how to market itself to the fan base.

Well in order to do that, you have to believe that your Rookie QB is the guy. Not sure the club is 100% sold that Dak is the guy yet. And what would constitutes going all in? Did you want to pay the WR 17 million a year? Or trade two 1st for a pass rusher, to pair opposite a guy that had more sacks than him last year. A lot of times you see teams go "all in" because they don't have anything else on the roster. We have the RB, the pass rushing DE, the OL already in place. We could use a safety for sure and possibly a TE, I want to see what this group can do before I make any judgement there. Maybe a WR but I think Gallup is as good as anyone. So what would be going all in??

the draft is the primary option the front office uses now because they are seriously deficient in determining personnel and can't write a proper FA contract. They now hide behind McClay and the scouts to decide for them.

Are there any free agents at this point who would actually be *good value*?

Any vets pushed to backup positions because they were beaten out by younger players? A team might be happy to move on from such a player.

I don’t see anyone calling for them to be stupid with the cap again. Are you seriously happy sitting here at the beginning of week 1 with $19 million in cap space and Rush as the backup, no legitimate NFL TE or coverage safety, below average OL depth, and anyone’s guess at WR? There have been moves to be made throughout the summer and even right now that could have made the team better but they have decided to pocket the savings instead. I will keep saying it until they prove me wrong, saving money has replaced winning as the main objective. Jerry must need cash for some new project or something because they certainly aren’t willing to put it into improving the team.

I would make sure we had those extra 19 million spent for sure. I would stay away from WR’s but I’d have a much better TE. The rest would go to defense. I would’ve signed sue and tried to be creative like the Rams. They got talib and freaking peters at CB now. Props to them they have a top 2 CB combo in the league now.
