Unveiling the new offense against unsuspecting Carolina

True.

Teams will give you all the stats you want between the 20s. They'll just wait for the holding call, dropped pass, or misfire, and let you punt and kick field goals.

Big plays and red-zone efficiency is what matters.
Yes. If we are 1st and goal from the 3. Please JG run the ball. Give it to Elliot at least once.

We saw what he did to this team last year with his spoiled brat behavior. No GM wants a one trick pony who always complains.

He did nothing to the team.

The only thing he did that could be viewed as bad was express his frustration with how predictable the offense was and should feel validated with all of the comments from Jerry and how they plan to be different this year.

Dez was only detrimental to himself.

He was a one trick pony because that's how our coaches call the game. You could make the case every WR and Jason Witten have only done 1 thing because they've all been asked to do 1 thing.

WE haven't been a dynamic football team in general. It's not just Dez it's all of them. They've been pigeon holed by the coaches.

OP is right that this is the type of defense we struggle against. We will most likely need to win with defense.

If our offense does well we can get VERY excited.
We put up more that 21 points I will be excited.

I'll just remind that before the 'Burning of Atlanta' we were averaging around 30 PPG last year.
This is pretty misleading. If you take out the Byron pick-6, they averaged 27.4 which, still, is very good, but isn't 30.

But they had 2 games with fewer than 20 points, had two games with fewer than 300 yards, a pick-6 was the difference against GB, and the offense fell apart against LA. The overall point totals were fine but the offense was not consistently good, at all, in the first half of the season.

Switzer muffed a punt in LA.

If they put any effort into making this pass game more dynamic I will applaud them.

Looking for matchups and not being so incredibly predictable and actually making DB's have to think when defending will be nice.

I'm just upset Dez never got an opportunity here to play for a coach that didn't allow DB's to sit on all of his routes.

Dez couldn't accept coaching or criticism in any form or fashion. It wouldn't matter who was coaching Dez if he wouldn't listen. He should be more motivated to listen now, but his recent actions tend to suggest not much has changed concerning Dez' point of view. I'm sure he is more motivated to show everyone wrong. I'm just not sure that equates to Dez accepting that he can't just do what he has done since he came into the league. By the time he figures it all out his opportunities to get a fresh start may have evaporated.

Dez wasn't coached.. That was a big problem. He was the one being hard on himself. Everyone else babied him. He needed someone to be hard on him. He didn't get it from the staff so he was way too hard on himself and it manifested into a loss of focus on the field.

He's only 29.. There is no way he has physically declined that much. He had an awful year last year and he still had 70 catches for 850ish yards and 6 TD's. With a horrible scheme and a QB that is not an artist with the football.

It's not like Lincoln riley is rolling out a gameplan.
It's not gonna look any different..

With Austin they'll have to honor the jet sweep which should open things up for Zeke. The team also spent a lot of time working on the deep passing game so if they can connect on a few of those defenses won't be able to crowd the line and sit on routes as much. One of the stories that came out when they cut Dez was that he wasn't a great route runner and limited what they could call on offense. The word from training camp was they were working on some natural picks which we hadn't seen in the past that could also add another nuance to the passing game.

Doesn't matter. He can still play. He almost had a 1000 yards in a down season last year. He should be on a roster and if he goes to the right team people are going to be irate at our front office because he will produce and we will have boring Hurns and a Hall of Fame flag football guy in Tavon Austin.

You guys have been saying that ever since his release. Do you really believe that teams believe what you are saying and still wont give him a chance? If so, don't you think that is a bit naive? By now aren't you starting to question if Dez will even get a meaningful chance to redeem himself? That ship may have already sailed. If it hasn't sailed, it is probably close to yelling "all aboard" and sailing away.

If Dez doesn't get some pretty serious interest right after the first game (when his salary will no longer be guaranteed because he is not on an opening day roster) then I think his chances of ever getting on a team start to plummett.

For what its worth, I think someone will get desperate after week one and give him a shot on a prove it, week to week, deal. Dez' problem is partly physical, but his biggest impediment is mental makeup.

There is a certain mystery about our offense this year. But the first mystery may be how well will they function to start the year without their Pro Bowl C, and three other starters from last year of varying degrees of effectiveness. I’m not saying it will be bad, but I am saying that none of us really know what this offense will be yet.

Regarding the running game, I’m always befuddled by fans who think all we have to do is “pound the rock” all day long and grind the opponent into submission as if we were Alabama, and the opponent of the week is Savanna State. NFL defenses are all talented. Some more than others, but being able to “dominate” an opponent at the LOS for 60 minutes is extremely difficult. Yes we have an enormously talented runner in Zeke but even he needs help.

The key to this offense gelling early IMO is going to hinge on how effective the passing game can be to start the season. Defenses will certainly put 8-9 in the box religiously to stop the run, and put their coverage people close to the Los to choke off the short routes until this offense can show the passing game is good enough to make defenses pay.

Good thread but I wonder if Dallas isn't as unsuspecting as Carolina about this offense? New starters at C, LG, WR1 and TE and they didn't get a really good look at this vanilla offense up against anything but vanilla defenses.

Add to this the ? that was raised in the latter part of 2017 about can the QB make the plays in crunch time? That will decide this season. If they don't get separation, that's one thing but if they do and he doesn't hit them enough, that's a whole other problem. Dak has to send the message that if they stack the box, he will make them pay and he needs to establish that from the getgo.

Add to this how will Linehan respond against stacked boxes? We saw how Turner handled that and even with Aikman, Irvin and Novacek, he would still not get played by the DC's. He knew the identity of the offense because he created it. What has the identity of Linehan's offenses been?

It is not the absence of talent that gives me pause for this season, it is the presence of this coaching staff.

Hope those things carry over to the real games and JG/Linehan don't clam up when the bright lights come on.

I don't think Dez was intentionally obstinate about refusing to run a certain route. I just believe that he was not capable or lazy minded to understand the concepts of route running. I truly believe that between his limited route tree and Wittens total lack of any sort of speed that this team was SEVERELY limited in what it could do offensively.

I'm not holding my breath the offense will be any different. Different players, that's the only change I think we see.
There is where I am at. Proof will be Sunday. Hope there is change but the past is all we have to go on and the past sucks.

Jeez I guess you have no hope other than a Garrett firing. I disagree with you man and am willing to give him one more year. I think you'll have a different view come end of the season.

This year's version of the Cowboys offense will use enough unfamiliar guys to incorporate some new twists, assuming our offensive staff is able to assimilate some of the things that our newly acquired players do best. If so, it could be an offensive advantage.

It's been said that thus far in the past, we've expected our receivers to adjust to our 90's schemes, rather than our offense adjusting to the strengths of the players. Here's hoping that won't be altogether true this year, at least not to the extreme. Obviously, it remains to be seen.

There are enough new receivers to cause some degree of confusion for defenses for a while, anyhow. Let's see how it goes as the new wrinkles with receivers unfamiliar to the opposition's defenses come into play. Hopefully, there'll be enough change in our C-boys' offensive schemes to cause opposing defenses some problems.
