Unveiling the new offense against unsuspecting Carolina

This weekend has an eerie, onerous feel to it as a Cowboys fan.

But it's also wrapped in a shroud of uncertainty for Carolina as well.

Carollina can play some defense, and last year's Cowboys offense would likely struggle to score more than 20 points against it. The Panthers can play you straight up, sit in zones, and fly to the short throws. That was Kryptonite for the Cowboy offense last season.

However, this isn't last year's Cowboys offense. Dallas showed almost nothing in preseason, vanilla-ing teams to death through a dreadfully boring 16 quarters of yuck. Basic, basic, basic. Not a hint of nuance or misdirection all August long.

Entirely by design. Carolina is left entirely to guess.

Gone are Witten and Dez. Here are Austin, Hurns, Gallup, Thompson, Olawale, 17 new tight ends, and an entirely new coaching staff under Linehan, along with a subtle hint from Mr. Jones to "make things more comfortable for Dak" by implementing more of what he did in college.

What's next is pure speculation. Including ours. The first couple of teams on the schedule get to find out first what's not on film yet.

Will it look wildly different? No, it'll still be Zeke and the freight-train running game carrying the water, but expect a lot of new looks, especially on 3rd downs. Austin will be all over the place. Look for a lot of underneath "picks" and quick outs disguised in all sorts of packages, along with some deep shots down the sideline when they can get single coverage with late safety help.

Will it work? Sure, I think it'll help quite a bit. Will it score more points? I have my doubts. Will it work against good defenses several games from now when it's all on film? That's where my darkest doubts lie.

Granted, it often takes a couple of weeks for NFL teams to settle in and find their rhythm, especially with so few reps in the preseason. So only so much can be expected or gleaned from the first game of the season.

But I believe the new-look Cowboys offense is hoping to steal some games early on the strength of their current anonymity. A good start to the season is vital with multiple tough games looming.

The Cowboys can weather the storm better with it's new-found defense. It's up to the offense to find a new stride, too, and as quickly as possible.

Carolina is a good test, and a great chance to take a big offensive step in the right direction.

I think the offense while relying on their running game will continue to have struggles in downfield passing game. Unless Gallup is an up and coming star and one of these TE emerges we have downgraded in talent all with the same QB issues. And if our OL has continued injuries it could place it all in jeopardy.

Our defense appears to have the most potential for upgrade with talent throughout. 8 of our starting 11 are 1st and 2nd round picks. The only weakness appears to be at Safety.

We might have a defense that carries our offense for the first time since 2003 season when that top defense carried Quincy Carter to the playoffs.

I’m giving you the reality of the situation and not some delusional mindset that pro athletes don’t talk back to their coaches.

It was petty by Dez. It was not a good look. I didn’t like it myself but it’s really nothing.

Go back and watch it again. It’s not a big deal.


My problem with Dez is how hard he was on himself and how that manifested into mistakes.

Nobody was hard on him specifically so he did the job himself and he didn’t know when to back off.

Dez isn't all bad. But Dez was not too hard on himself. That's why he couldn't run the route tree.

If Dez really didn't have good coaching (and was smart enough to know it) then at some point he should have hired a route guru to help him save his career. Even when he knew he was in danger of being cut he gave lip service to it but never actually did it.

Even now, without a job, he still hasn't hired one. About the only conclusion you can draw from that is Dez still believes he doesn't need to improve, and that he is good enough already.

Excellent post and cogently captures the POV many of us have going into game one. Indeed, doubts about which Boys’ team shows up week one has been a box of chocolates situation pretty consistently during the Red era.

While not the focus of your post, I am also very interested to see what this D brings to the table. Can it finally take the next steps in ALL phases? Could it carry what I think will be an offense that will mightily struggle early because we focused on the yuck in not showing our hand but more likely cuz of injury risk aversion.

Like u said - gonna be a good test this week and the next few games for that matter.

If it doesn't work, I'm awfully curious what the problem will be this time.
Passing game should be better than it was in 2016 If this was accurate.

I can tell you what the problem will be and what it has been. Dak doesn't have an NFL skill set. He just doesn't. Tony could make the throws to Dez and everyone else. That's why they are going to a more college type offense. It will probably work, but only for a year.

Imo our offense would have been fine with this defense paired with it and Elliott back. Dak I would imagine would improve as well with another notch on the belt. Wish they would have kept their hands off for at least another season and seen how it would play out. Could have just added a Taylor Gabriel type during FA for that speed element.

Regardless, I'm certainly ready to find out.

• Play the run
• Attack Conner Williams. They got plenty of tape showing that he lacks power
• Confuse looney with diff formations and attack Or "test" 'Martins knee.
• Do not double any receiver or tight end
• Make Dak beat ya with his wide receiving corp.
• don't worry about intermediate or deep passes everything is gonna be short and sweet
• Clap harder that Garrett thus confusing him
• Chew three pieces of gum as compared to Garretts two pieces. Boom victory

Yet Beasley and Williams are still here. Beasley got open fine until they used bracket coverage on him.

In fairness to Dez it is probably likely that we didn't have the best receiver coaches in the league. On the other hand, it sure doesn't seem like Dez listened to coaching anyway based on the tv series, and he doesn't seem to have discovered that the entire league thinks he needs to hone his craft. That fact is lost on him.

I firmly believe that absolutely no one in sports related media, and a very large percentage of posters here actually realize how effective this teams pass rush will be out of the gate, game 1, and I don't believe that Carolina really has a clue.
Now our offense may not be as effective, but they wont have to be,,, this D is going to bring some slobber knocking hits.
