Unveiling the new offense against unsuspecting Carolina

Don't forget the utter lack of slant plays other than a token one here or there.
They're going to run a ton of them this year. They always do.

The problem is that, with Dez, they only gave him slants and fades, basically, so the other team could easily defend them. Not sure how a more balanced WR corps can fix that or not.

Sounded like he was tired of his coach hyping up the other team. It wasn't a great reaction but if that wasn't for you then neither is the NFL because stuff like that is everyday stuff.

Isn't that part of the problem? You don't tell your coach "I don't want to hear what you are trying to tell me". I would think that is part of the reason that teams don't want to touch him.

If you don't think he's done physically, then there are other things keeping him off a roster. Dez doesn't seem to have taken to coaching well at all which is a big part of not having a job.

The coach may have tried but I didn't see any evidence of it.

When Cole Beasley is telling people they are just now learning route concepts and how to properly run routes I think what I've said isn't so far off.

You guys are way too petty. So what he acted like a little baby when the coach pointed out how good Denver was. I'd bet it wasn't just the coach hyping up Denver. It's probably gone on for awhile and Dez was just in one of those moods where he didn't want to hear about how great the competition was and said what about us.

Regardless we have overanalyzed that nothing "situation."

This post is an example of how people will go to any lengths possible to make excuses for Dez. They should have coached Dez, but when a coach is telling Dez something important then it was the coach's fault for triggering Dez.

Or, Gallup could just be another good #2 receiver, and the Cowboys will need an upgrade in the draft a year from now. I like the Gallup pick in the 3rd round, but I also liked (and still like) the 3rd round selection of Terrance Williams.

My point all offseason is that we KNOW what the ceilings are for what the Cowboys have in the other receivers:

#2 wide receivers - Hurns, Williams
#3 wide receivers - Beasley, Austin
#4 wide receivers - Thompson, Brown
#5 wide receiver/special teams player - Lenoir

The ONLY guys on the roster that are unknown are the two rookies - Gallup and Wilson. We simply don't know. Hopefully, one of them becomes a #1 receiver. We'll find out soon.

I don't think we "know" about any of these guys other than Williams, Beasley, Brown and Lenoir.

Austin could perform anywhere from a top 10 pick to a complete bust. I tend to think that he will be weapon for us ---closer to where he was drafted ----than he has before, but that's merely conjecture on my part.

It wasn't the coaches fault.

It's just nothing. I'm sure of all of the things that go on behind the scenes Dez telling the coach that he always does this in regards to their opponent and what about how good we are is towards the bottom "bad things" that go on in the NFL.

If you don't like Dez that little rift will make you feel validated but it's really nothing.

It's not highschool football.

Coaches and players go at each other.

That's why these coaches like Saban and Harbaugh go back to college. In the NFL it doesn't work that way. Especially once you establish yourself as one of the best players in the NFL.

The biggest thing to me is that I think our new and improved defense will free the offense from a lot of the burden of clock-grinding. We had to run the ball 25+ times a game in order to keep TOP up, and that led to a lot of incredibly predictable 1st down run plays and 2 TE power-running sets.

I think the offense will be much more free to do its own thing again, and like you said, I think it's going to have a very NCAA-ish look. Dak is at his most comfortable making short throws out of shotgun-wide sets, and on the flip side, our personnel sucks for running under-center plays with TEs that couldn't block a cheerleader and a bunch of slot type receivers. What I'm hoping to see is more rub routes, screens, and RB swing passes like the college guys use - cheap, high-percentage throws that get guys out in space. Put a couple of those together with a heavy dose of Zeke runs and I don't think this offense will have a problem with keeping the chains moving. Our passing game the last 2 years has just been "Air Coryell, but out of a spread set", and it's gotten way too predictable - outside WRs go downfield, slot guys run short option routes, the defense leaves LBs in the box to cram up the short throws and takes away our crappy outside receivers with single coverage. The passing offense worked in 2016, it was figured out in 2017, and it's not going to work in 2018.

With the completion of preseason and team rosters finally trimmed down to the league-mandated 53-man requirement, the start of the 2018 season is merely days away. Football is finally back after what seemed like an eternity of waiting.

For us Dallas Cowboys fans, Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers probably can't get here soon enough. But, as excited as we may be to see this matchup, the Cowboys pass rushers could and probably are absolutely giddy to take the field.

As much as we, Cowboys fans, have worried about the health of the offensive line, it probably fails in comparison to what Carolina Panthers fans are going through. They are probably dreading to see what the team rolls out along their offensive line in hopes of protecting Quarterback Cam Newton this season. Their OL is that banged up!

Just yesterday, the Panthers placed their starting Left Tackle Matt Kalil on Injured Reserve. They will now have to rely on Taylor Moton, their 2017 second-round draft pick, to start at LT. He hasn't started a single game since entering the league, which should allow Randy Gregory to feast...

Actually it's not "nothing". The fact he isn't here anymore is proof of that fact.

Once again you making excuses for Dez. That's your prerogative, but the rubber finally met the road. Dez lived and died based on his reputation. At some point his reputation couldn't save him anymore. He was not a student of the game and it eventually was his undoing.

Short and Poe in the A gap will definitely test our run game. Kuechly is just a phenomenal player. It'll be a chess match when our offense is on the field. If we're getting push up the middle then it'll ve a long day for Carolina. If we lost the battle in the middle then it'll be that more challenging for us. Need rhythm early.

This weekend has an eerie, onerous feel to it as a Cowboys fan.

But it's also wrapped in a shroud of uncertainty for Carolina as well.

Carollina can play some defense, and last year's Cowboys offense would likely struggle to score more than 20 points against it. The Panthers can play you straight up, sit in zones, and fly to the short throws. That was Kryptonite for the Cowboy offense last season.

However, this isn't last year's Cowboys offense. Dallas showed almost nothing in preseason, vanilla-ing teams to death through a dreadfully boring 16 quarters of yuck. Basic, basic, basic. Not a hint of nuance or misdirection all August long.

Entirely by design. Carolina is left entirely to guess.

Gone are Witten and Dez. Here are Austin, Hurns, Gallup, Thompson, Olawale, 17 new tight ends, and an entirely new coaching staff under Linehan, along with a subtle hint from Mr. Jones to "make things more comfortable for Dak" by implementing more of what he did in college.

What's next is pure speculation. Including ours. The first couple of teams on the schedule get to find out first what's not on film yet.

Will it look wildly different? No, it'll still be Zeke and the freight-train running game carrying the water, but expect a lot of new looks, especially on 3rd downs. Austin will be all over the place. Look for a lot of underneath "picks" and quick outs disguised in all sorts of packages, along with some deep shots down the sideline when they can get single coverage with late safety help.

Will it work? Sure, I think it'll help quite a bit. Will it score more points? I have my doubts. Will it work against good defenses several games from now when it's all on film? That's where my darkest doubts lie.

Granted, it often takes a couple of weeks for NFL teams to settle in and find their rhythm, especially with so few reps in the preseason. So only so much can be expected or gleaned from the first game of the season.

But I believe the new-look Cowboys offense is hoping to steal some games early on the strength of their current anonymity. A good start to the season is vital with multiple tough games looming.

The Cowboys can weather the storm better with it's new-found defense. It's up to the offense to find a new stride, too, and as quickly as possible.

Carolina is a good test, and a great chance to take a big offensive step in the right direction.

We will unleash the new offense and it will be a bloodbath for Carolina.

First play - Flea flicker to Austin running a wheel route down the left side line. He's high stepping to the end zone.

They'll be ready to collapse on Zeke all day. Brilliant scheming by Linehan taking advantage of an overly aggressive defense.

Maher misses the extra point. (short)

I don't think there is anything new to unveil. Zeke, Zeke, Swaim, Zeke, Hurns, Zeke, Zeke, Swaim, Zeke, Zeke, Zeke, Gallup, Zeke, Zeke, Zeke

I’m giving you the reality of the situation and not some delusional mindset that pro athletes don’t talk back to their coaches.

It was petty by Dez. It was not a good look. I didn’t like it myself but it’s really nothing.

Go back and watch it again. It’s not a big deal.

My problem with Dez is how hard he was on himself and how that manifested into mistakes.

Nobody was hard on him specifically so he did the job himself and he didn’t know when to back off.

Dez wasn't coached.. That was a big problem. He was the one being hard on himself. Everyone else babied him. He needed someone to be hard on him. He didn't get it from the staff so he was way too hard on himself and it manifested into a loss of focus on the field.

He's only 29.. There is no way he has physically declined that much. He had an awful year last year and he still had 70 catches for 850ish yards and 6 TD's. With a horrible scheme and a QB that is not an artist with the football.

You realize that you are saying he needed people
To be harder on him, but then in the same breath, you’re making excuses for him.

Dez was with the team for 8 years. 8. That’s a long time. Sooner or later somebody either gets it or they don’t.

And I’m not anti Dez btw. But after 8 years a player needs to stop having excuses made for why he is having issues.

I have to laugh at this thread though.

Yes, I'm sure defensive coordinators are up at night worrying about how we will use all these weapons.

Do they flood one side of the field with Hurns, Williams and Deonte Thompson? Do they go two TEs and threaten the seams with Swaim and Jarwin?

Ambien can't help you here.

I’m talking about a specific incident that was nothing.

Overall he needed the coaches to not baby him.

In that specific situation he was tired of hearing Dooley talk about how great the other team was. He wanted the coach to stop disrespecting the WR group by his constant hyping up the other teams players.

I didn’t agree with Dez, it was petty, but the fact we are still talking about it like it was something big is ridiculous.

Yes catch, but what I’m saying is. When you are saying he “needed coaches to not baby him”. That is
Still Making an excuse for Dez.

He had 8 years to get his stuff together. 8. After 8 years a player shouldn’t need special coaching or have excuses made for him.
