Byron Jones

I have no idea how Eberflus and Marinelli dismissed Byron as a corner for 2 years when Richard saw it from literally before his first training camp.

When Byron gets his big second contract, either from us or in FA, he needs to donate a nice chunk of it to Richard.

I don't think they dismissed Jones as a CB, I think they just felt safety was a bigger need. With Woods and Frazier coming along they may have felt the timing was right to move him back to CB.

I'll admit, I was one of those guys. I watched his college tape and thought he was a natural FS, and I was in favor of moving him after his rookie year.

But I'm just a guy on his couch, y'know. Part of it may be Richard's scheme, but Jones looks totally comfortable at corner whereas he was always kind of a duck out of water as a deep safety. They ended up sitting him for Frazier last December. Now I don't know what the coaches saw on tape or in practice or what Rod/Eberflus look for schematically from their corners. But it seems weird that they'd keep hammering a square peg into a round hole, to the point of benching him when it didn't work out, rather than once in 2 years trying to change the hole.
I didn't realize he could fly...;)

It's not just Byron benefiting from better coaching, look at Anthony Brown. He looked promising his rookie year, I remember commenting that he was one of our few DBs that actually turned his head around and looked aggressive in coverage. Then last year, he seriously regressed, he didn't play or look like the same player. He looks much better this year and more of what I hoped he would look like going into his second season. Coaching matters and having the right coaches to bring that talent out of the players can make all the difference.

Think his strong point is man coverage, he came in as a rookie and shut down some dominant tes that year! Considering how badly the team was killed by the te the 2 years prior to him coming in I think some of his criticism has been a bit unfair. Also wonder if he would have gotten less critsm if the line had been creating the same pressure over the last 2 games for the last 3 years. I didn't like the pick when they made it, would have preferred rolling the dice with Frank Clark after trading down, and I still haven't been as down on him as what some seem to be. But then, I thought he was a mid or lower 2nd round prospect!

Just for the record Lawrence needs to show me more in big games. He beats up on weak teams. I never denied Byron could guard a guy in man. But I like the progress and hoping for both of them to have big seasons.

Don't remember you once saying anything about his strengths. Which leads me to believe you never did.

Changing that tune though!

Next season my guy is Woods.

Maybe Bill Parcells was right that you should wait a few years before casting judgement on a player. Our two best defensive players are clearly Lawrence and Jones, and people can't stop talking about Dorance Armstrong and Chidobe Awuzie.

Actually, I heard an interview where Richard said he was an admirer of Byron Jones while he was still coach at Seattle.

No doubt college to pros is a big leap, there is time involved for many players. Unfortunately for many if a player does not come out day 1 playing like a stud he is called a JAG.

Yeah a lot of fans are forgetting that the Cowboys didn't have a true FS who can play out and cover deep passes. I think the the thought of movement started with Wilcox unable to tackle Adams in the open field in the playoffs and Jones coverage against Gronk in 2015.

Some may have forgotten that Jones actually started out playing CB as a rookie, but later in the season moved to safety because that's where we needed the help.

Short term memory affects 95% of posters on here. I'm sure if Sean Lee has less than 15 tackles or misses the game on Sunday that threads will be started about moving on from Lee.

LOL I don’t know whether to be proud or cry. The simple fact that we are in awe of good coaching is beyond embarrassing.

Really? I'm totally not embarrassed at all to give credit where credit is due.

If I'm to label it, I wouldn't call in awe -- I'd think of it more as appreciation.

Be embarrassed if you're too proud but you should also admit it's working.

as some remember when he 1st came to Dallas he said he had always wanted to work with Byron (and some trolled the idea too)

It was out of necessity, poor safety play on the roster. Nobody could cover the TE.

Lee is in the last 2 years of his contract I believe. With his injury history, age and his replacement already here its unlikely they resign him nor should they. Discussions on his departure are coming regardless of sunday!
