Yes, and rugby chaps go through about 80 minutes in Union play of nonstop action, and I don't see a lot of hammy issues even there. Could you imagine the All Blacks having the amount of hammies as we do? I certainly can't. Their hits are more refined I suppose than NFL football, but they still hit rather hard. Yet, the conditioning of those chaps is staggering. Our lot could learn a lot from the All Blacks. I'd love for them to have a friendly match against the United States in AT&T Stadium just so the Cowboys can see what proper conditioning looks like.

Hoooah! Rugby...and I played on the Fort Polk Rugby team. We had the bladder award where the biggest arse at the post game party, had to carry around a deflated rugby ball all week.

But the skills are quite a lot different. There isn't the same amount of intense and one on one explosions in rugby, as in football. Shorter and much more intense explosions are present in football. Although a scrum is very interesting in it's feature, it's not nearly as demanding as line on line play in the box.

Love the sport of rugby, but much more mass and explosion has to be developed in conditioning for football. Otherwise, conditioning would revert to five to ten mile runs every day...for cardio efficiency and muscle stretched conditioning. They are different and require a somewhat different approach.

Myself, I feel a 'soft' training period is the culprit, despite a team effort at additional stretching and yoga involved. The biggest and fastest player still dominates the NFL. Finess runners don't last long without some adaptability as to strength and size.

I never played rugby tbh. However, I do enjoy watching it and one of my cousins in England does. I see your point about how it'd have to be adjusted, but I'm sure there's a way to do the conditioning necessary for the NFL but that at least resembles rugby-style conditioning. Mind you, some of those rugby chaps, especially New Zealand and Fiji, are absolutely MASSIVE people.

In college, I was a linebacker. I played head up with the offensive tackle. They usually had me by about four inches and about 70 pounds, but nose to nose...

Haha, I was a kicker in high school, as you could probably guess (mainly used for kickoffs when I wasn't hurt).

Nothing wrong with that, my friend...

Eugene Upshaw kicked off for Texas A&I before being drafted by the Oakland Raiders and going on to the Hall of Fame as an offensive guard. When he kicked off, the stands would stand up and chant: 'Field goal, Tuck.' He then would part the uprights...but never kicked in the NFL.

I didn't know that. That's certainly interesting. Actually, what's funny is that I wasn't exactly a great punter, but, when I got to college, I ended up being a year behind the current punter for the Jets who went to my school. He showed me the Aussie style kick, and my punts are actually quite good now that I know the Aussie way of it. My kicks had a bit of a wobble on it which made catching them very difficult. The problem is, trying to punt the American way for me made them not very deep or effective despite my big leg. Edwards then showed me the Aussie way of it, and I found that it fits my style of kicking much better with how wobbly they are. I'm able to control the kick better which means that I can put it down where I want, and they're still difficult when I'm playing pick up with my mates.

Thanks for the share...I only punted in High School, and in my stocking foot. Once had about a 65 yard punt, called back by an off sides defender going down field. It was against Victoria back then...Texas football. They were rated 4 in the state. Really fast team for then. They were defeated by Alice, who went on to the State playoffs. We lost to Victoria 27-24. Alice then had Bitsy Garcia that went on to Houston, (a running back).

Yes, I should mention that it was only on an intramural field near my dorm (I moved in my Jr year from community college) when I met him and learned that trick.

At the Air Force Academy, we were required to participate in at least one intra mural sport during the year. Even if one played a varsity sport. Mine, football.

I played intra mural as well...and had to box for our squadron in the unlimited weight class. I was 1-1-1. Was out pointed in one match.

Haha, for me, it'd have been English football. I do enjoy it. I actually did something like that at community college. We had to pick a sport for a PE course, and I chose that version of football. I was the goalkeeper. I was decent, but I didn't exactly have great defencive help. I played in a little tournament at the community college in 2013 against other colleges, and we got slaughtered in a lot of the games. There were no offsides, so I kept facing 3 on 1 or 4 on 1 which is nearly impossible to defend as a keeper, and I eventually ended up pulling both hamstrings and a calf muscle with the attempts I had to make. In the last game, despite those injuries, I tried to play and made a brilliant sweep save. That's when you go underneath the shooter and try and grab the ball. When there's no offsides and you don't have a defence, that's all you can really do. Anyway, I got the ball and went to get up (obviously slowly given the issues) and I got deliberately kicked in the head. It was not pleasant to say the least. I nearly got myself sent off for how I went off on the ref for it because I got called for a penalty despite being the one kicked. Still, I do enjoy playing and enjoy doing so at local parks. I actually live in the Houston area, funny enough.

Actually, the last time I played pickup (a few months ago), I was the only not-Latino person in a group of people I didn't know at a park and represented England that game, of course. I actually held my own nicely. I was the defender, but I didn't give up a goal when it was in my area, and I assisted on a few goals. I even made a nice save as a defender by heading away a ball that was nearly in the goal. So, yeah, Team USA and England won that one lol.

Well aware of the 'cheap' shots in sports. Especially with less on the line for the players. Since they were cheap, I'll apologize for them. I had five stitches in my top lip following a karate match in Korea. There weren't supposed to be any head punches allowed...still had to keep fighting and did. I won...

Sorry about the officiating...they are to control the game and conduct as well. I would have.

Oh, I got right up at them...well....more hobbled over there, and asked why the chap that kicked me wasn't sent off. They weren't impressed despite the clear body evidence that I had, in fact, been kicked cleats up.

I played soccer for A&I when I was uneligible due to 3 too few hours following my transfer from the Academy. We started their first soccer team, and most were from South America...on the field. I later played for the Javelinas, football.
