A month ago there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about how our lack of defensive tackles was going to sabotage the team. Marinelli was crucified for not valuing the big nasties in the middle. Our front office was vilified for not getting a 340 pound thumper in the middle.

Six games into the season the defense is #2 in points allowed. We’ve given up 3.5 yard per rush attempt. I guess the guys inside knew a bit more than the guys on the outside.

The angst predated discovering the guy who saved them - Antwaun Woods. You must remember, back when Jihad Ward was being talked about as "the answer".

It certainly wasn't "a month ago".

Marinelli I bet has finally seen the light concerning having a big nose tackle we knew it all since he's been here. There's a screw loose somewhere in his mind. Kris Richard probably had to work him over in the closet when no one was watching to get him to see the light.

At the end of the day all I care about and the only thing that matters is points against.........................If you're Top 10 in that category at the end of the season you've got a chance if you make the "tournament"......................

I think it's more about talent. We have more talent at DT than we've had in years - Irving, Collins, Crawford, Woods.

Whatever the reasons, the DT emergency never materialized. I think that's what @T-RO is pointing out. It's one item on a long list of things people work themselves up about that never actually materialize.

For example, I was actually concerned about LB depth, back before we drafted LVE but after we let Hitchens walk. Turns out Joe Thomas can play, the backups are pretty good, and even though we spent a #1 pick to replace Hitch, the dude looks like he's going to be an impact player.

Al Woods? I think you're jumping the gun, and missing the message. You must have a tough inside presence at NT. Al Woods provides that.

When Marinate has not had a tough inside presence, we've sucked against the run. Sorry you didn't notice!!!!!!

This post is pure head-scratcher.

Marinelli didn't change a thing in his philosophy or approach. He likes his rotation of guys and he doesn't like space-eating hulks. He likes penetration and quickness.

Rod eats critics for breakfast.

Woods is a mere 312 pounds, not a big NT type at all. And Dallas got him off the waiver wire. He's like so many guys that are spares until they play under Master M.

Marinelli eats more critics for breakfast.

Yes because up until this season, Rod has been putting top defenses on the field.

LOL

Given the pedigree of the guys he's coached in Dallas...he's been elite.

-Lawrence was drafted in the second round...expected to be pretty good...not the monster he's become.
-George Selvie was total journey man...under Rod 7 sacks
-Antuan Wood is on the street...until he's with Rod...then he's showing something
-There are lots of guys that have career seasons with Marinelli

As far as the secondary...no I don't think he's much good in scheme or coaching there. His thing has always been the d-line.

Wait until December

His perennial development of 8-deep keeps the guys fresher than other teams and more able to sustain an injury.

I'm worried about Tank's shoulder and don't understand why he waited to get it fixed. But I expect to see improvements from Gregory and Armstrong.

Haha yeah, you were. Ol' gmoney112 tried to provide comfort, but alas.

I think the LVE pick was just due to him being BPA, although we did need something at LB at some point. He was my BPA anyway. Dude had 10 year productive career and potential multiple Pro-Bowls written all over him.

The team is 15th in Defensive DVOA. 24th verses the pass and 5th verses the run.

The overall number 2 ranking is counting stats aided by the glacial pace this team plays at.

Sorry isn’t DVOA one of those proprietary stats created by PFF or some such outfit? It hasn’t been universally accepted as a standard has it? Why not use points per drive, which generally is acknowledged to be a useful metric. (Just asking. I have no idea if the D ranks better based on PPD.)

Regardless, given that they rank 5th in DVOA against the run, I’d have thought your stats leave the OP’s central thesis untouched.

The key was in moving tyrone crawford back where he belongs. Just like byron jones.

Not PFF, Football Outsiders.

And it’s not based on subjective grades like PFF but actually crunches real stats.

There's no reason at this point to ever doubt Rod. One of the best in the business

He finally came around and kept woods, a big boy that can play the nose the way its meant to be played , by a big boy. This wasn't what he ever wanted before, though I will agree Brian price was an attempt to fix this problem from the previous year. You notice how we don't get pushed back now at the line of scrimmage like we use to
