Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott became the first offensive player penalized under the helmet rule this season. He became the second offensive player fined for lowering his helmet to initiate contact.

The NFL docked Elliott $26,739 for lowering his helmet to initiate contact, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.

Officials flagged Elliott for the hit on Eagles defensive back Corey Graham in last week’s game.

Elliott will appeal, per Archer.

Elliott is the fourth player the league has fined for violating the rule, with then-Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt the other offensive violator who saw his pay docked. Al Riveron, the NFL’s head of officiating, has used hits by Raiders running back Doug Martin and Patriots running back Sony Michel as examples of violations of the rule, but neither player was fined.

So what decides whether they get fined or just "used as an example" of a violation?

How do they derive that figure? Why so dang much?

This attempt to put respect back in the NFL bottle by fining players and tossing flags for tough football play is even more absurd than the issue from last year that had the entire country in turmoil.

The Cleats for a Cause is their response, trying to regain their tarnished respect. Then fining a player for contact just reminds of their veneer thin morals - which is to say no moral compass at all.

Want to make a real impact. Fine the owner for these hits to the tune of 100K a pop.

Precisely!

* if there was a ZEBRA AWARD involved concerning this infraction?
And to selectively pick& choose who is forced to suffer a monetary penalty as well and who isn't, is a criminal act in itself & lawsuit worthy (IMO)o_O

I guess we should just be happy that he wasn't also suspended for six games.

I know Zeke lowered his helmet, but so did the defender. Also, Zeke’s lowering of his head is not uncommon as to how Zeke approaches the line on short yardage runs. It just so happens that this one isolated run looks suspect. I think the league is just following up on a questionable call. I don’t think this was blatant.
