A restructure takes his 7m base and stretches it out over several years but every dime is paid

A paycut is different.....his base pay is actually lowered by 3-5m.....maybe he can earn some back with incentives, maybe not

Either way works for me. Wouldn't mind extending him 1 year or simply cutting his salary. I like having 3 really good linebackers on this team. It's a problem we havent had in a very long time.

There is a place in Dallas for Lee and possible coaching future. How awesome a back up would he be for the Cowboys? He is not able to hold up playing 60 snaps a game.

I forgot about that! Is a cold business sometimes.

Yep. I believe Landry truly cared for every one of his players, but wasn’t afraid to make the cold business decision. I think some of that was learned piloting B17s over Europe in WW2.

NFL analyst believes Sean Lee needs 'fresh start' in 2019

With only one game remaining in the regular season, the topics of conversation have largely switched from playoff-clinching scenarios to potential coaching changes and a look ahead to free agency. Many of the teams that struggled to put up points on a regular basis did so due to injured starters or a lack of overall talent along the roster. Fixing these issues is doable via the draft, but free agency is another option. Of course, the talent pool only works if there are potential starters available due to expiring contracts or being waived, and it looks like there will be a slew of intriguing options possibly joining free agency

I still don't understand this mind-set with Lee. He can easily be a part-time starter here with Jaylon and LVE and go off the field when we only use two linebackers. Our best option right now when we do this is Damien Wilson, and Lee is a much better player. Plus, it would limit Lee's wear and tear and possibly keep him healthy for a season.

In three-LB sets, we would play Lee at WLB, LVE at MLB and Smith at SLB, which is what we were planning in the preseason because SLB to allow Smith more opportunities to rush the passer.

Love Lee, but his body is toast. He must have gone to the same trainer Miles Austin went to who wrote the following book. " How to wreck your hamstrings in 3 easy lessons".

He's set to make $7M next year, which is last year of his current. Few moving parts here......from my understanding, he's not ready to retire, he's no longer a starter, and I'm guessing he's facing a pay cut. But like said earlier, I don't this is a money issue as much as he still sees himself as a full-time starter. That's not going to happen here........

Lee has a 10m cap hit next year, and he's not going to be starting. He can't stay healthy, and that doesn't get better as you get into your mid 30s.

I love Lee, he's been such an amazing player and leader for our defense, but the defense thankfully no longer falls apart when he's off the field, and as much as we'd all love to see him retire here on his own terms and transition into a coach or whatever, it's just not going to happen.

He's going to end up getting signed to some team next year, unceremoniously miss half or more of the season, and fade into obscurity until he retires.

Lee is more of coach than player at this stage. Only team who would sign him is to bring along their young LB group. His contract would be low signing bonus & based on incentives - Lee might just decide to retire.
I agree. Lee needs a fresh body more than a fresh start. Maybe his health and level of play will both be better with him rotating. I am still wondering why Lee, Smith and LVE can’t be in the field at the same time. Having three LBs with that much talent should be considered should be a good thing instead of a problem.

I think a good coaching staff could find plenty of uses for three quality linebackers. I'm not concerned about his money because we're not in a position where we need it.

Lee hasn't forced his way into the lineup and I think he truly has the best interests of the team in mind. He's under contract and I don't see him raising a stink about fulfilling that contract. We're much better off with three great linebackers on the roster than two.

Jerrah can't wait to give Garrett a 5 year extension after the 1 and done in this year's playoffs .

They can, and the staff already was planning on it, having said it was moving Jaylon to SAM before several factors led to him and LVE being the two main starters. Smith has what it takes to play the SAM position when Lee is on the field and then man one of the two LB spots when we are in nickel.

Sean really needs to think about coaching... I can really see him starting off as a MLB coach and eventually probably one of the best DC coaches.. Dude is football smart!

I agree Shawn Lee needs a fresh start right on the sidelines coaching oh, he is done folks his body will just not hold up, I believe the running number is 12 million dollars in dead money pertaining to missed game paychecks over the last few years I saw the article on it I was amazed how much it added up to. With that being said I would love to have 53 Sean leaves on our team with the heart he has the knowledge the drive but his body will not allow him to play anymore., he's finished and we cannot keep wasting paycheck money and someone that doesn't play plain and simple it's just a business decision

We simply cannot keep paying any player that kind of money for missed games, however on the sidelines as a coach possibly the defensive coordinator in time he might be invaluable. But from what I've read he still wants to play and you probably can't blame him but at some point he's got to make a decision as well as the Cowboys have to make one probably a pay cut
