FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving has missed "multiple'' mandatory drug tests in the last two months, sources tell me, putting in jeopardy not only any chance he has of participating with this team during the NFL Playoffs but also his chance of playing in the league anytime soon.

Irving's off-field life continues to be plagued by legal turmoil largely related to conflict with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he shares a young daughter. And his on-field efforts have been marred in part by a high ankle sprain he sustained in practice on Nov. 2. But since incurring that injury, Irving has rarely shown up for work here inside The Star -- not only missing participation in practices, but also declining to attend practice as an observer, declining to attend meetings or watch film, and declining to accept rehab help with the ankle and encouragement to stay active in the weight room.

"He's just sort of checked out,'' one person close to the situation tells me.

Yeah what else is new

he checked out a long time ago.

He's salvageable, though.

First, he needs to get better.

Dallas, as a team, knows these issues well. They have the staff to help him get on path; they did it with Dez.

It's not an uncommon story of NFL players to bounce back from addictions.. Irvin did it.

Agreed. This is what I respect about JJ. He is undeniably a humanitarian. He consistently demonstrates that he is more concerned with the wellbeing of his players over what they do took improve the team.

I know this is counter to what all the hardcore fans believe as is evident by the posts on this thread. Its easy to complain how this is a wasted roster spot and we should cut his butt imediately and why waste time on this primodonna nut case. Views i am sure most would not share if it was one of their loved ones in this situation. I don't prophecise ri know what Irvibg us going through, but based on what has previously been reported he is facing real challenges in his n personal life. And if they are keeping him on the team to beat deal with it, then that is a good thing.

At the end of the day football is a sport for entertainment however life and its challenges are real and can have detrimental impacts to the individual and those around them.

You can’t help someone who won’t help themselves
When he decides to help himself then he can be helped

You can't leave out other possibilities, though....like head injuries, etc.

Plus, some of these guys don't have the educational tools and coping skills to deal with things like divorce, custody, court... which isn't easy for anyone to go through, much less someone in their 20s, especially for someone who only knows how to be an athlete.

Sometimes you get a RGregory story
Most times you get a Rolando McClain story

As long as you don't invest too much and don't rely on them as starters you can take some chances

Adios Irving....just cut him and add a ST player

Hes quickly going from someone who won't showup, to becoming someone they need to have security make sure he doesn't show up. Sounds like he's had some sort of major mental breakdown!

Understand what you're saying - Football is indeed entertainment but, in Irving's case, it is a means to an end, a method for funding his needs and desires. It is a very solid foundation from which to resolve the "real life problems."

He, like many of these guys, never quite figured that out.

Good!

When dealing with a drug issue, a person typically has to hit rock bottom before he opens his eyes and sees that he has a real problem.

This is an issue far more important than football. He has a young daughter that will need a real father. It's time for him to pull his head out of his butt and fight the biggest fight of his life.

He will be in my prayers.
