Home Security Suggestions

So I think I'm going to throw up a camera or two on the outside of my house. The way the front of my house is designed, there is a little enclosed walk-up area at my front door. So, if anybody is standing at my front door knocking, I cannot see who it is at all, and I don't have a door peephole. Drives me nuts. So, a camera could solve that! Plus, home security seems like a nice feature.

I've just only begun looking around on the internet but I thought I would ask on here to see if anybody has one they could suggestion or have experience with. Some of the Nest cameras look decent for the price, but from what I understand, you have to pay for their cloud subscription. Well, that seems dumb to me. Why can't I just use my hard drive? Anyway, I'm open to suggestions.

I recently picked up SimpliSafe security system to replace the original security system on the house. I'm not sure they have an outdoor camera, but I believe they may have some sort of housing to protect one outdoors.

Wow! Thanks for the link! Guess if I ever get home security, it won't be with anyone associated with that company.
I don't know to what extent it happened, but its a reminder that cloud-based services that store your data are always at risk of exposing your data internally or externally.

Hopefully, there will eventually be laws to protect our privacy, but right now about the only recourse people have when their private cloud-based data is shared, viewed, etc. is when they can prove they were harmed or might be harmed as a result and that can be very difficult to do.

When I got insurance on my house, I was asked if I had home security measures? I said "no", then asked, if I did "how much do I save", insurance lady says "the savings is not worth the investment", then why ask? Gotta love insurance companies.

Very interesting. That is one of my issues with the cloud services is privacy. I mean, I'm sure most of the footage anybody stole would just be from around my house and pretty boring, but, it's the principal. Then there is the subscription cost and the availability of access if your network dropped. Just seems more and more like a better idea to get a more isolated DVR/NVR type system. A lot of those systems come with 4,6,8 cameras though. I really don't need that many. I'm not setting up a prison perimeter.

I'll have to keep shopping around and see what I can find.

I installed a Nest outdoor camera. It was relatively easy and I can look at live video from my iPhone and even talk to people at my gate because it has a speaker. Video is in 1080p.

We’ve been happy with it.

Does anyone just rely on their dog to scare off intruders?

Growing up a neighbour had a German shepherd, I would have pitied the fool who broke in their house...An ambulance, maybe a hearse would have been needed.

I think the ring door bell is probably best on the market right now for the money anyway.

My German Shepard was more effective than an alarm system. I think I've the told story about ADT trying to sell me an alarm system.....annoying bass turds.

They can be vicious dogs. Another thing, the neighbour had 6 kids, the dog was fantastic with his kids, not bad around me...a stranger was not getting after his kids...no way.

My brother in law had ADT. To me it seemed annoying, every time they went out, you had to arm it, get home disarm it. They finally got rid of it, the city brought in a by-law that after the 2nd false alarm that the police respond to was a $500 fine. And after the 1st fine, they did not reset you to 0 false alarms, nope another fine. The school board I worked for was always getting dinged with fines.
