Using a ‘93 game plan in 2019

One of the after shocks of the rams loss for me was what I saw when I went back and watched the game again. I usually record all the Cowboys games so I can go back and look at the game when I’m not just into the moment live.

My impression after watching that game again after a couple of weeks of letting it stew, was how badly our team got outcoached. The effort was there. Our guys played hard for a full 60 minutes. Effort wasn’t the problem at all.

DEFENSE
Here’s the obvious kicker- on defense everyone was constantly out of position. They simply used our aggression from our front 7 against us. They DID NOT physically whip us. They just hatched a game plan that took advantage of our tendencies on defense. They came up with a great game plan that didn’t require physical dominance. Let’s call it a “modern” game plan. A 2019 game plan. Lots of deception and finesse.

OFFENSE
Us on offense, it was the exact opposite. Garrett and Linehan offer no wrinkles other than an occasional three TE formation or using Noah Brown as a blocker in short yardage situations. Our offensive game plan was simple- run the ball, physically dominate them. Pass when you’re behind the chains.

Problem is what are you gonna do when Connor Williams and Joe Looney can’t block Aaron Donald? Garret’s Answer: Keep doing it anyway. In fact our game plan looked it was devised for a game in ‘93 when our Cowboys could physically dominate anyone. But it’s 2019 and no team in this league can physically dominate anyone else.

CONCLUSION
We have a lot of talent now on this roster. We aren’t that far away from anyone in this league in the talent dept. But we are way behind in the coaching dept but Jerry apparently isn’t bothered enough by that. We got beat in the film room and rams coaches offices- not on the turf. We rolled out a ‘93 game plan against the best game planner in 2019.

And If we’re ever going to compete for a championship in my lifetime again our 76 year old owner has to understand that Garrett isn’t going to get us to the promised land without a major offensive philosophy change. I’m not holding my breath. His only coaching move appears to hinge on our ability to physically dominate everyone.

SMDH.
Not sure if you really re-watched the game if you claim Connor did a bad job against Donald. And it was the Rams that used our 93 Cowboys game plan against us. It worked pretty well.

Offense
actually the problem I see with the O i the time it took to implement, it's as if they were still putting in aspects of the O in week 16 ... while at the same time working in personnel, due to injury. And bad OL coaching and of course the brilliant FO that didn't resign Cooper.

Whoever the new OC is Colombo is on short leash. BTW, add a LG in FA and this OL is fixed, assuming a healthy Frederick.

Dak friendly means extending plays and getting the ball u field to Zeke, Cooper, Gallup, Austin, Hurns, and IMO Jarwin. Notice, the play speed of the Zeke, Cooper, Gallup, and Austin. This is a big play O in development. Not a simple ball control system.

this is headed away from a 50/50 run / pass to more like 45/55
even at that Zeke needs a play making back up

also don't be surprised if Kellen is the OC

Defense

no TOs from a system that's supposed to produce TOs in exchange fora gambling run D that some times stops people in the back field or gets gashed.

a health Rams OL mashed our sup par and injured DT rotation (notice how different that game would be with Irving, or any above average DT added) ... most every observer of this team screamed for a DT last off season ... the FO did basically nothing - huge area of need

the other huge need unaddressed last year was FS - a true ball hawk

BTW, we watched Kris call plays in Rod's 4.2 system ... the Ram's game is evidence he may not be the next great DC in the NFL, we shall see

Conclusion - a dumb FO can trump their own good talent choices with glaring weak spots ... the Boys season ended because they were manhandled by a healthy OL and DL, units they failed to build in the off season

football is won and lost in the pit

It’s interesting how the rams use formations. They almost always use the same formation but they flip sides of the field, who they put in the slot, and how they use motion. We do almost none of that.

Not Almost, we use NONE PERIOD! Most D know what we are going to do, and when certain people come in they know the jet sweep is coming. What about maybe passing out of the jet sweep red anything to change it up. WOW!

I put it more on Linehan, Marinelli and Garrett.
Kris was running the defense all season and has said this as recently as last week. Kris's defense was historically bad against the run with nearly 300 yards given up and 2 100 yards rushers. Offensively Zeke was held to 47 yards and we still got 22 points. The hate is real if you blame anyone but Kris IMO.

1993 was one of the greatest years in Jerry's life. He tried Chan Gailey, he tried Parcells, he tried the 3-4 defense - none of them gave him the success of 1993.

So he brought back Garrett, switched back to the 4-3, and has spent the last decade trying to recapture the old magic. It's the only thing he's seen work.

I'm not holding my breath that old man JJ is suddenly going to turn into a football innovator. As for his son, all he knows is working for his dad. Good luck.

The defense gave itself away. The Rams said that they knew what our DL was going to be doing pre-snap on 95% of the plays. If you know the left DE is going to be pulling, changing the call at the LOS to run the play at the pulling DE isn't rocket science. Gurley and Anderson averaged over 5 YPC BEFORE first contact. Thats crazy and it happened only a week after we held the #1 rushing offense in the league to 47 yards.

Simply not true. Connor Williams was on skates most of the game. On the critical 4th and 1 play, The whole left side- Tyron Smith, Connor Williams and Joe Looney got pushed backwards. Connor did a very bad job when it counted most.

And no the rams did not use a 93 game plan. They were NOT physical offensively. There were smart.

Well Bob, isn't that how Jimmy J got it done? I mean hell, we did win 3 SB's using that philosophy...and JJ isn't about to go and change the whole wheel just cause it has 1 broken spoke on it. Good lord, were doomed to mediocrity!

Watched an extensive break down of Connor on this game. He was pretty solid.

He manages games instead of leading them. He plays “not to lose” instead of playing to win. He seems more worried about losing than determined to win. He looks at crossroads situations more like “how can we safely manage this situation?” instead of “how can we take advantage of this situation?”

In short, Garrett is a manager, not a leader.
BINGO!

There are some excellent plays here. Connor did some good things. But those highlights are cherry picked. Tell me on the critical 4th and 1- probably the most important snap of the game for our offense- that Connor Williams and the whole left side of our line didn’t get manhandled. Which I blame not just the players execution. The Cowboys are the easiest team in the league to scout. Everyone in the stadium knew Zeke was getting the ball and because our line was incapable of manhandling the rams front 7, the play was blown up.

Sure, let’s pat Connor Williams on the back for making some good plays against Donald on a few plays here and there. Yay Connor. But when it mattered most, he got owned.

Been a couple weeks since a "this is the 90s cowboys team before they took off" thread.
