Why Roger “Bad-ell” is the worst

The NFL owners should be eternally grateful that NFL fans are so committed to pro football and their favorite NFL teams that even the historically bad commissioner Roger Good Ol Boy can’t ruin the game. Although he’s certainly tried.

In his annual incredibly boring speech called “State of the NFL” yesterday, Roger bored almost everyone to a complete stupor while he shared his annual garbage load of bad jokes, excuses for bad officiating, and skirting of some of the real issues facing the NFL. Let us count the ways Roger “Bad-ell” has been a horrible commissioner:

• Despite bragging upon his coronation that he would be the “law and order” commissioner and crack down on player’s bad behavior, his crackdowns have proven to be aribitrary, inconsistent and at times flat out confusing. Anyone here know what the rules and consequences are for “bad behavior”? This has been a disaster for the league. And can anyone say it has improved player off field behavior?

• Even though the NFL is still very popular, it’s share of the sports entertainment market under Bad-ell has slipped. Ratings among younger fans have slipped, and although they are still fairly strong, ratings and market share for the NBA and MLB have actually risen.

• The officiating has deteriorated in his tenure to the point where in a freakin’ conference championship game, one bad call was so egregious, the outcome of the game was clearly affected. And somehow Bad-ell remained silent on it for nearly 10 days. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman usually comments publicly about officiating mistakes with 24 hours. The NFL rules and their enforcement have become harder to understand and harder to enforce under Roger’s tenure.

• Worst of all, Bad-ell represents only the owners and their greedy interests, not what’s best for the game. NBA commissioner Adam Silver is revered by both NBA owners AND players because he often sides with players on certain issues and is willing to issue orders that handcuff owners so the game can be cleaner, safer, and more conducive to fans and players- not just a bunch of billionaires.

This list could go on and on. I just get really queasy in the stomach every time I see this spineless, incompetent boob, who makes around $40 million a year for the garbage he throws out there.

I respected former commissioners Pete Rozelle and mostly respected Paul Tagliabue. They were giants compared to this completely hapless clown the NFL owners now prop up to do their bidding.

I really hope the owners and Goodell hold the players feet to the fire in the upcoming 2021 labor negotiations. Squeeze them until they cry for mercy. 80% would be working at Home Depot if not for football, the owners need to make them realize that.

My hunch is history will reflect one day that Goodell led the NFL thru one of its most turmoil times in league history when the sports existence was threatened with lawsuits and players conduct challenged the perception of public sentiment combating the issues of the day while negotiating and leading to an increased popularity and prosperity.

Goodell should be applauded for taking on one of the greediest and arrogant owners in league history not to mention the most powerful leader in the free world.

Strong leadership is what the league has needed during this era. And I believe history will bode favorably on Goodells impact. As always there will be fan outcries and push back when controversial decisions are made which aren’t always popular to mainstream but he’s kept the league moving forward when such issues could have splintered it off damaging the prosperity of all involved.

And I enjoy taking on the tougher issues we face. It’s easy to follow the masses saying we hate Goodell but it’s tougher to say we hate what he represents because then it becomes hypocritical to what we want to believe in.

Goodell represents to some fans everything we hate about the NFL from the owners. I see Roger as a strength attempting to rule over the arrogance of players and owners this era has produced not to mention the issues this era of society has presented.

But many fans resent the power and means the owners have bestowed in Goodell. He has more power than previous Commissioners you have supported which has taken the brunt of criticism away from owners and front office no longer directly responsible for disciplining their own.

No problem with your opinions Greg. You are truly one of the best Cowboy fans I know. I appreciate your fandom. My problem isn’t your opinions. It’s when you tell me what my opinions are when I never said that. It’s not a big deal. Just clarifying my earlier comment.

Example- if I say I like the color blue- there’s nothing complicated about that. If you don’t like blue, it’s fine for you to say you prefer red over blue. But don’t say, “What you actually meant to say Bob is that you really like red.” No, that’s not what I said. I have no problem with differing opinions. I just don’t like it when someone changes my opinion to something I never said.

Fans should be protesting NFL owners and not the hired help.

My take on the NFL discipline tactics is that it's ridiculously inconsistent. I know the NFL feels the need to "Protect the Shield" and the NFL image, but quite honestly, I don't care what a player does in his personal/private life. If he manages to stay out of jail, who cares? I'm still watching them play. Things have gone soft in this World, but there's no consistency with how fines and suspensions are handed out. So as long as a player doesn't take banned substances, I couldn't care less if they are a super nice person.
People need to stop treating athletes like they're supposed to be role models. That's what parents are for.

Goodell is there for one main reason, to keep watch over the money. His relationships and response to the needs of the Golden Geese, TV nets, makes him the best man for the job. He's the trigger man when the ratings are slipping and the deflector from the owners during controversial elements within the league, when they keep their mouths shut and stay in the background. His handling of that whole anthem thing was first rate and he maneuvered through treacherous territory as well as anyone could. He wanted it to fade, just as it has, without pulling more players into it.

Goodell was the Commissioner when they negotiated the TV rights fees for more than the entire value of all combined franchises. He was Booger's choice because he thinks the same way, no such thing as enough. He was instrumental, along with Booger and several others, in the creation of the cap but not for the reasons most think, parity. The cap was established to put a hard ceiling on the players' share. Everything centers around the owners' take of the haul and Goodell does that very well.

The next CBA and TV negotiations are why the owners kept Goodell and Booger failed in his attempt to cap Goodell's salary. They need Goodell for both of these events on the upcoming agenda and this CBA could be the worst yet. There are not many more concessions the owners can make in lieu of changing the players' piece of the pie.

How can we rail on Goodell? He is the Commissioner of the greediest organization ever assembled. My only real complaint is that he allowed them to change the game to suit their own needs. As far as his dealing with the players, that is also at the wishes of the Golden Geese. It must be the perception of the public that someone is trying to "clean up the game".

He is paid to prevent loss by protecting the "integrity of the game". Meaning the product the NFL owners are selling. He makes a huge salary but whatever he makes is irrelevant.
