The problem with fans and the status quo

Question for the people who don’t think certain problems are the fault of the coaches.

Have any of you ever considered that, although some problems may not be the fault of the coaches, they also aren’t acting as the solution to some of those problems.

Is it too much to ask for a head coach, that after 9 years on the team, they solve enough problems that the team can make it to an NFC title game?

Or is it easier to just say “nope not Garret’s fault”

The teams issues aren’t with coaching. No matter how many threads we want to start about it.

Agree. The main weakness we have on this team is the Mediocrity we have lining up behind center.

He’s not a baller and will never elevate this team in the passing game. Just weak.

its really not understanding the problem. like math, if you dont know the equation you cant solve it.

we have the same problems with garrett year in and year out. we fall on our faces usually at the same spots with garrett

Bingo.

That’s why the “it’s not the coaches fault” is a BS argument.

The end of the day, it’s a head coaches job to find solutions to problems and find ways to overcome them.

Garret hasn’t figured that out after 9 years.

Maybe if Murray isn't run into the ground during the regular season, he has a little more zip through that hole and Peppers doesn't touch him.

But I don't see coaching as the big problem in that game. Sort of. Our big problem was just how low quality our dline was, particularly with Terrell McClain out. So many guys waiting to wash out of the league.

You could put this one on the GM. No quality on the dline. And the decision to franchise Spencer again, instead of moving on. Then the decision not to try and replace Spencer once he went down. Then the decision to actually play him - at 50% of the snaps! - during the GB game.

The decision to play Spencer goes on the coaches. Spencer never played another down in the NFL. He had nothing. We played him half the game.

Reminiscent of what we did with Glenn in 2007. We count on an injured player with nothing left to give, and come the playoffs, we pay for it.

Good post. The DL was our achilles heel that year (and game) for sure. 100% on the FO's incompetence.

I say four, because I doubt they're good enough to be the 1st or 2nd seed in this NFC.

The hallmark of Garrett's teams is the ability to win games against bad teams and fortunately for Garrett, the NFC East is extremely weak right now.

We went 5-1 in the division, but 5-5 outside of the division. The thing is, I absolutely expect this team to be demonstrably better next year, but I still don't expect any level of consistently at a high level which the Cowboys have never had under Garrett. It's why he has never reached the NFC Championship. That requires a level of consistency that Garrett does not possess. It's why he has 8.5 years as head coach but only 3 playoff births with a playoff record of 2-3.

McVay performed terribly in the playoffs, but in two years has had his team through 4 playoff games... that is one shy of Garrett in 6.5 less years....

I just find it stunning that people can actually defend his record and this mediocracy.

We had an easy Schedule this year too. Now we have a hard schedule, due to making it to the playoffs, so logically we should be less successful next season, as has been the trend here for decades.

Also consider during the years of 8-8, Garrett personally cost us at least two games each of those seasons with his inability to clock manage, and still hasn't really learned to game manage.

As I look around the league I’m actually impressed we were an Elite 8 team. I certainly don’t see us as a Final 4 team.

An average QB and league leading rusher adds up to a 22nd ranked offense with a top 10 defense to boot.

How anyone would expect much more is beyond me?

There aren't many that defend Garrett around here anymore. He has his strengths but his weaknesses are glaring. Unfortunately he's mastered the skill of pulling himself out of a hole. I know its hard to believe but this year is his last hope. There have already been reports about a divided front office in regards to Garrett. He would be an excellent addition to the front office, but unfortunately as a coach to this point hes proven unable to get us past the ceiling of a divisional game. Winning the division two of the last three year, and with a young QB simply served to buy him more time. Hes become the NFC Marvin Lewis.

Garretts greatest asset to the Cowboys is influencing Jerry’s instincts building a better culture adding more talent while continuing to avoid major collapses to end seasons.

I actually blame Garrett for that GB loss! The reason is he ran Murray into the ground during the season without rotating Randle in enough. Some will say Randle wasnt any good but he played good when he came in and should of been a bigger part of the offense. Murrays fumble is what the cost the Cowboys that game and to me he was tired when he hit that hole you could drive a car through. A fresher player is either gone untouched to the endzone or holds onto the ball. I see the same running a guy into the ground with Zeke also.

Blaming Garrett for a guy fumbling barely a minute after a halftime rest is reaching for a scapegoat. Now if you want to talk about losing at home to the 4-12 Commanders, ultimately making the team a 3 seed instead of the 1 seed that season, I'm fine with laying that on JG.

Is there an argument for Lewis that his teams were more talented than where they went?

There’s not one season with Garrett where I felt our team was more talented than where we went.

Sure both playoff losses to Packers were tough and games we could have won but GB was definitely a proven championship contender with one of the greatest Qb this era.

Both years we didn’t have a great enough defense to make a difference. Now we don’t have a great enough offense. This notion that coaching is the deciding difference doesn’t hold our talent and lack of in certain areas accountable.

It’s not assuming that.

I’m not of the belief that replacing Garret with just anyone guarantees more success and a championship. What I do know is, Garret has been the coach for 8 full years now and he isn’t the answer. Based purely off the results.

Depends on what the answer is? Your answer and Jerry’s are probably not aligned.

And why it’s difficult to hold Garrett to the same measurement we would other HC around the league.

I’ve definitely considered that. And whether the actual problems have solutions at all. I’m not sure they do, it I’ve long considered the combination of Garrett/Stephen/McClay to be the most reasonable shot at addressing things.

I don’t think that 9 years of coaching tenure necessarily ought to be a free pass to the NFCCG. It depends on the team. And not all NFL jobs are equal. The one in Dallas is one of the hardest jobs in the league.

No, that’s not reasonable. This is all on Jerry. It’s Jerrys decision to not hold Garrett more directly accountable.

I’d argue the reason being is Jerry knows how responsible Garrett is for football operations.

Personally , I’m not sure why given our dysfunctional situation with Jerry’s personal agendas we don’t see Garretts tenure here as more successful especially when you consider we’ve had much more experienced HC’s and coordinators come in here and have less success than Jason.
