The replacements for those players cut would obviously cost something, and especially at WR where Beasley would be gone along with Hurns and Williams and it would be nice to spend more than minimum dollars to add to the position.

Earl Thomas - $10 million
Sheldon Richardson - $7 - $8 million
Tyler Eifert - $2 - $3 million

Free agency is handled, the team's biggest needs are filled, and it's on to the draft to backfill for depth.

I would sign him for around 7 or 8 million per year on a two year deal. That's about it. Basically take Lee money and give it to him. At least I wouldn't have to watch the horrid Heath whiffing on tackles all game long.
I just don't have the fascination with this guy. He's selfish, not a team player, injury prone, and declining steadily. I can live with my latter issues just not the selfish me first attitude he has clearly demonstrated. For me, not the kind of veteran you want to instill with a group of young players still searching for an identity. His selfish me first attitude doesn't go away by joining the cowboys that is something he's clearly had from birth. I just don't see any upside with that type of player.

The Cowboys can cut four underperforming contracts today and pay for the first two years of any Earl Thomas contract without impacting current cap room by one cent:

  1. Sean Lee - saves $7 million
  2. Tyrone Crawford - saves $6 million
  3. Allen Hurns - saves $5 million
  4. Terrance Williams - saves over $2 million
Two years of All-Pro safety play for "free".

Of course it would impact the cap. Your plan has them cutting 4 players, and replacing them with 1. That leaves three open roster spots that need to be filled, meaning three more contracts that will end up being added to the cap.

I disagree. He has been mostly a great team player there. He is JUST the kind of veteran leader presence that could completely solidify that defense. His bit of selfishness has been wanting to be a Cowboy. Not sure I will fault him for that. At the end of the day he didnt miss any games for them.

His age and injury history are a big concern. Hence the under 10 mill salary and the two year deal. But any way you slice it he is a world of upgrade from the dreadful Heath.

It was just an example of what the team can do.

If you're interested in what my actual plan would be, this is it:

I would cut those four aforementioned players and save that $20 million, and use that money to sign:

Earl Thomas for $10 million
Sheldon Richardson for $7-$8 million
And Tyler Eifert for $2-$3 million

I'd fill the team's three biggest needs in free agency and go into the draft with the flexibility to go BPA to fill my remaining depth needs.

I hope all the clowns see now how giving up a 2nd and 3rd or first for him would have been plain dumb. Now that its the offseason and we can sign him for nothing.

Nah. We’d have been able to negotiate his next deal - and if things didn’t work out and he left, we’d get a 3rd round comp pick. He’s going to cost more money now.

Lol I'm not saying he's not coming to Dallas but the fact he's moving to Austin doesnt tell me that. Player's in their later years in the league will sometimes move their family to where they want to live post career.

He's from Orange, went to UT (in Austin), trains and rehabs in Austin, married to a woman who also lived in Orange and Austin and they were married in Houston.

But would you at least admit that the move doesnt hurt the chances of it happening any?

Well we look at it differently. Sitting out camp and practice is selfish and demonstrates a person more interested in himself than his teammates. Especially when he was getting paid 9 million. We can just disagree on that part but with you on the other. If they do bring him in hopefully no more than 5 mill a year for me.

Its just a matter of time. Steven just didn't want to give up a #1 for him.

The fact that Seattle wanted a #1 is mind boggling. Here is a player who was in the final year of his contract. They could have had a 2 (which is too much for my blood too).

And now they get a "maybe 4th rounder", an extension that's if they do next to nothing in free agency with the $50 million in cap space the year have.

Their stubbornness really cost them in this deal.

Moving his family to Austin has fueled rumors? How so? Austin isn't a hop and a skip away from the DFW area, its over 3 hours drive time just to get there from Fort Worth. Its not like he would be making a commute like that on a daily basis.
It's literally closer than every other franchise. So, it's not unrealistic to assume.
