We can maneuver the cap and get a deal like that done stash.. ^...but to guarantee 70 mil is nuts. hurts the team.

CANT KEEP THEM ALL AT THE MAX CAP HIT. SOMEONE will be out of luck. Its simple math. Dak..yes..I get it, hes the QB...we MUST PAY HIM. Zeke..short term, yes. DLAW isn't getting 70 mil guaranteed. PROMISE YOU THAT. The entire deal can't be more than 70 mil or it will crush any chance we have of keeping key players. We will be in cap hell.
I think tank get 20 mil a year
Probably 4 yrs with an option for 5
Probably 60 mil guaranteed

none of us do..we aint experts..but what I do know is, WE HAVE A CAP. We cant be held at gunpoint by one player. LOVE DLAW...HE'S MY GUY, but I am not willing to break the bank.
I don't claim to know anything about the cap so I won't try to offer an opinion on a rumor from random internet guy. If you're not willing to break the bank, he's not your guy and he won't be on this team. He's earned it.

He doesn’t disappear for 3/4 of the season... its fine to disagree but to overstate your point doesn’t make your point valid

D Law is considered to be a top 3 DE by the majority consensus at this point. At worst he is top 5. Elite players don’t “disappear”. He finished with double digit sacks (again), played through a shoulder injury the majority of the year (instead of protecting his health in a contract year), and had a lot of quality QB pressure and played the run well and consistently.

He is an all around DE and there is more to the position than just sacks.

It's not overstating it.

In 2017 he had 14.5 sacks. 7.5 of them came in the first 4 games. The 12 after(3/4) he had 7. He did more in sacks in 4 games than he did the rest of the year. He played like a double digit sack guy in the first 4 games and single digit sack guy for the next 12. TFL was the same thing. 8 in the first 4 games and 7 for the next 12 (3/4) Again, He did more in the first 4 than he did the next 12. QB hits were a bit better but still a big drop off. 11 in the first 4 and 15 in the next 12.

2018 wasn't any better. 10.5 sacks and 5.5 and half of them came in the first 4. The next 12 he had 5. Once again he did more in the first 4 than he did in the next 12. TFL in 2018, 8 in the first 4 and 7 for the next 12. Once again, He did more in the first 4 than he did in the next 12. QB hits once again was a bit better but a drop off. 9 in the first 4 and 14 the next 12. That's of over 2 a game for the first 4 and a bit over 1 game the next 12. Dropped half.

He disappears for 3/4 of the season. I realize there is more to de than sacks. But even in tfl he disappears . He drops of in his tackles also. I think he's a very good run stopping de and I'm more impressed with that than I am his pass rushing ability but he drops off in that too.

If I'm going to HAVE TO pay a guy who has great 4 games stretch it will be one who's has in the last 4 games not the first 4. Although it's not all about sacks, pass rushers biggest stat and what teams pay the on is sacks. It's not the only thing but it's the main thing. He has them overall but its a issue when he disappears for 3/4 of the season. Hes a beast in Sept with 13 sacks the past 2 years in Sept. He has 3 in the month of December COMBINE the past 2 years. Thats a issue.

BOTH SIDES can get what they want if they are reasonable. No reason we cant keep Dlaw and not kill our cap.
Lawrence has potentially 31 other options. The cowboys only have one. His best value to the team might be a trade. Signing him won't be easy.

I had a 5-year deal for him pegged at exactly $100 million. That's the going rate and the coast of doing business. Compared to the deals for Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack, it's a relative "bargain". My issue would be with the "guaranteed money" portion based on his suspension and injury history.
Suspension history... he got suspended for taking a med prescribed by his doctor for the purpose it was prescribed. The league bans it because it can be used to speed muscle regeneration after lifting weights. Considering he had just had back surgery its probably unlikely he was lifting. The league not letting him take a med prescribed by the surgeon may be what caused having to have a 2nd surgery. My story and sticking to it anyway!

he can earn it somewhere else then if he wants 70 mil guaranteed. Love the team more than just being held hostage by 1 player that's not a QB.

HATE IT..but I feel what you said might be the best option, trade him. We can get at least 2 1st rounders plus players for him.We may not have much choice if he wont budge.

That might be true, but to get suspended means you have failed before . He was already fined 4 games for a failed test before . So it's not like this was a one time failed drug test.

Last two seasons? 2 sacks more than the guy the Bears traded not one, but two #1 picks for and then signed for 6-years, $141 million.

Somebody made All Pro 3 of the last 4 seasons.
Somebody has never been All Pro.
Remind me which one is which again.

And if we want to model ourselves after another team, how about the perennial SB champs?

Well said. Anyone not willing to acknowledge that Lawrence no shows in the last half of the season are just blind.

If they could get 2 first rounders for him, they'd trade him immediately. If they could get 2 first rounders for anybody on the roster, they'd do it.

But they can't.

Note to myself: Bye Bye.
i hate over paying players....i understand why they go for the big bucks....they are putting their health on the line....but teams get crippled especially these huge contracts for QB's..i hate it....

Outside free agents are bad value. Signing your own dramatically increases hit rate.

You talk about good value and low risk. We reset the market with both Martin and TFred. Jones and Lawrence will be paid and well worth it.

Also please never evaluate a DE solely on sacks. It's embarrassing.

What's embarrassing is saying sacks don't matter, and offering nothing in their place that does.

Martin and TFred were starters from day one. Between them they only failed to make the pro bowl once, and have 4 All Pro seasons. No injury history when signed. No suspension history. They tick all the boxes. Lawrence doesn't.

Signing your own increases hit rate not my magic, but by the choices you make based on your increased knowledge of the player.

Jones is at this point a better bet. No injury history. No suspension history. But only one good season, and there was a drop off toward the end of that.

yup he vanished in the late part of the year. I didn't even know he was on the field against the Rams. Is that a 70mil guaranteed guy? SOLID player and is a beast at times, but for the right price I want him. Not for a kings ransom...I pass. Tag him and trade him on draft day if he wont budge off his demands.
