Cowboys are one of three teams to not appear in NFC Championship since 1996

Sure, if you’re honest and say that is what you are trying to point out, something specific to Dallas.
Just don't hide it as an NFL stat.
Going all the way back 22 years...may as well go back a few to a more round number like 25. But it wouldnt maximize the negative that an arbritrary number like 22 years would.
But the reference is the last time the Cowboys were in the NFC Championship Game. The Cowboys ARE the reference point.
It's basically a stat to show how long it has taken the most popular NFL franchise to reach the NFC Championship since the last time they got there.

We can do this for any team if we go back to the year after they last sent and start there.

We get it. It’s been a while
Yes, but the Cowboys are the most popular team, and, until the Patriots and 49ers took over, had more appearances in the Championship Game then any other franchise.
No one cares about how long it's been since the Chiefs reached the Championship Game. People (fans) care how long it has taken the Cowboys to get there. And had we gotten to the NFC Championship this year, the ratings would have been through the roof.

I’d say, unless you're trying to specifically point sonething out, people usually would use
Last 5 years
Last 10 years
Last 20 years

Something like that

The last 22 years is maybe something you see someone use when quoting stats maybe once in a hundred times
It’s extremelyarbitrary and random

UNLESS, of course, you're trying to highlight something very specific about one entity.

Is that more clear?

Obviously they chose to bot go back 1-2 years further or even less because the goal was to absolutely maximize worst case for Dallas.

Still true though

Since 10 years is less arbitrary, you can say that the Cowboys are 1 of only 4 teams that haven't been to an NFCCG in the past 10 years (DAL/Wash/Det/TB)

For those that don't mind it being arbitrary, it's actually in the past 9 years.

Rather than using "1996“, it would be better to just say that 13 NFC teams have been to at least 2 NFCCG since the Cowboys were last in one.

The time frame isn't really the important part, especially since nobody uses a 23 year window to evaluate anything.

Yeah, 23 years is a bit funny
Unless they are being honest and saying they want to highlight specifically Dallas in the worst possible light, then pulling 23 years out their tail is very arbitrary.
Now if they come out and say that's what they want to do, then okay.

Otherwise, if you're already going 20 something years back, then you can completely flip the script by going back to 1992.

  • Since 1992, NO NFC team has won more Super Bowls than the Dallas Cowboys.
or
  • Since 1992, only one team in the entire NFL has won more Super Bowls than the Dallas Cowboys.

The sad thing about the length of this NFCCG dry spell is even if you go back to 1992, they still are only in third place - tied with 4 other teams.

Even sadder is that Commanders and Lions fans will say you are arbitrarily excluding them because they were both in it in 1991. :)

If you don't like the way Jerry runs things, buy the team and do it your way. Otherwise, there are 31 other fan clubs you and everyone else that complains about the Cowboys can join.
You must be quite a fairweather fan to even think that way!!!!!

How about that. What an amazing coincidence that they just happened to use the maximum time.
That's the point, it was a specific stat targeting Dallas.
Go back one more year and they have a super bowl
4 more years and they have three
It was done to maximize the negative to Dallas and no other team.
That's all
Why are you defending the last 22 years? Are you JJ?

It would be more honest, so yes.
I don't care what tbe final results are. That wasnt the point.
Just be honest if there is an agenda

Just wait 3 more years and it will be a nice 25
