Metallica.

There aren't many bands, let alone metal bands, out there that had a peak like Metallica did. Their first 5 albums can all be argued to be right up there at the top of being some of the best albums ever created.

I mean, right out of the gate Metallica was killing it. Their near decade long dominance as a band is right up there with what the Beatles did for rock music in a 10 year span.

I think a better competitor would be Iron Maiden

My four favorite bands of all time are Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and AC/DC.

Metallica is #1 just for the fact that they have more great songs than any of the others.

For Slayer, I love all their albums all the albums with Dave Lombardo on drums with the exception of World Painted Blood and Hell Awaits. Not a fan of either of those albums.

Pantera were freaking awesome, though Phil really went down hill. Great Southern Trendkill was easily my least favorite album from them. Though Drag the Waters is easily one of my favorite songs from Pantera. Reinventing the Steel was a much better album, but still suffered from Phil's lack of effort towards Pantera. CFH through Far Beyond Driven are just fantastic. I can even listen to Power Metal, but I don't go much further back than that.

AC/DC was far more consistant with Bon Scott, but besides Back in Black which is one of the best albums ever created from any artist. Most of their albums I didn't care much for except a song or two. Though they did put out a lot of great songs over that time. It just took a lot of albums to do so.

That said, the sheer volume of great songs make it where nobody can compete with Metallica as the greatest metal band of all time.

Exactly. It's very common though. Seems like nothing but a herd mentality of contrarians who rail against Metallica and get self-enjoyment out of it..

Absolutely NOBODY can deny their impact and sheer talent.
Metallica is heavy metal for beginners that after you listen to for a little while you graduate to better heavy metal.

That being said.
I rarely listen to mainstream metal.
I listen to bands most people never heard of

Not into hard rock. Do like a little AC/DC but just a handful of songs. Most all of all 3 are just noise.

Metallica but it's close for me. Pantera is the better heavy metal band, but Metallica is far more diverse. Real question is Dimebag vs.Hammett. Which ever one of those two you choose is probably your band winner.

Some of that money came from me. I was once a huge Metallica fan.
I know what you're talking about. I don't listen to them anywhere near as much as I did years ago. They are still in my playlist though. Along with about 500 other songs.

Metallica because they gave us metallica and megadeth.

Did not like anything the guys from Pantera did after Pantera either on Phil's side or the brothers side.

If metallica did not punk out for years it would not be close.

Now if we could have had the Abbott brothers in Metallica instead of Lars and wah wah pedal Kirk... Now that would be wicked.
