Just to show how meaningless it is to measure a players speed on a race track for 40 yards without pads....here ya go

yes and a no. by itself it doesn't indicate if a player is going to be a good football player or not, there are other timed events as well as film to watch, that help paint the whole picture in your evaluations. its just a piece of the puzzle.

40yd time isn’t an end-all in itself; simply another measurable parameter, such as height, weight, vertical jump, Wonderlic test, 225lb bench reps, etc, used to evaluate rookies.

No player was ever drafted based strictly on his 40yd time — or any other single measurement.

So because the fastest guys weren't the best football players means the 40 is meaningless? That is ridiculous.

The 40 and vertical jump are 2 great tests of explosiveness and they are the 2 top ways IMO to indicate upside at specific positions.

This is why Leighton Vander Esch was being overlooked by some people.

He's 6'4 250 and people didn't like him because he played at Boise but you watch the tape and see a guy that's incredible in space on top of that his testing is off the charts then it was a clear indicator that he should be going higher then what his projection is.

You realize all this shows is single fastest 40 time per draft? There are many other players drafted every year that are as fast or faster than these recorded times. Maybe not on the day of the combine. Speed kills.

40 yard dash was designed to test special teasers to see how fast they could get down the field

It literally means nothing like much of the combine means absolutely squat

Each individual exercise and even the interviews are meaningless. If they only did one thing at the combine it would be uselesss. If they only did the interviews it would be useless. If they only did the 40 it would be useless. If they only did the vertical it would be useless . So on and so on . It's all of them together that makes it useful.

I disagree.
10 yard split and vertical leap is looked at to determine explosion off the line.
3 cone shows how a player can change direction without losing speed.
Broad jump shows lower leg strength, along with hip flexibility.
Shuttle run shows how a player, LB for example, can read and react while moving side to side.

Is it a guarantee that a player with be great if he does well in certain/all categories? Nope. But it does give scouts a chance to see the player in person and either check off question marks or create new question marks. Especially when there can be a huge discrepancy between players due to strength of teams they played against/their own team

it's like joining the military, you aint passed nothing until they stick 4 fingers up your rump!!!! All the other testing is just window dressing, leading up to THAT big moment.

The purpose of the 40 time is to provide a common measuring stick for short bursts of speed. It is a single piece of many pieces of a puzzle that measures a player’s ability. Of course it doesn’t measure whether a guy can play football or not, but again, that’s not its purpose.

Exactly Bob, its like that 4 finger rump check, now that doesn't tell them a guy can shoot straight, or hump 100 lbs up and down hills all day, BUT it does let em know, after eating those C rats or MRE's his colon is gonna be clear and clean!( PS I'm adding a bit of humor here guys)...

This is the time of the year where you get to hear, "well Jerry Rice ran a 4.7!", as if we're supposed to make judgements about potential based on outliers.
